Fiddleback Collections

Could be the lighting and the oil, but kind of looks like black palm to me.

Nice collection, Julian! Love the sweet gumballs and the Nessie. The Woodsman and the wood-handled KEB ain't too shabby either. :D

yeah, I think you're right, at least not likely bog wood as I've only seen one being put on a Bushcrafter, and I think Bartlax is the proud owner of that one. Either way it's a sweet looking blade, something so classy about a black natural handle.

sweet collection bear, really dig you grouping the synthetics and the naturals. What wood is the bushcrafter? Is that ancient bog wood?

Thanks, the Bushcrafter is Dyed Black Palm, not a great pic. The Kephart next to it is same wood but with bolsters.

Very impressive collection Jules. Nice balance between wood and synthetics. I agree with Tod that the Competition Cutter is amazing with that old school 3D spalting. I notice that you don't have many 3" models. Is that by choice or you just have not found the right ones yet?

Thanks for sharing the photos.

Phil

Cheers Phil,

The Comp Cutter is indeed a beauty, I think it went unclaimed on a friday last year, I didn't have funds at the time and I had to wait for it to resurface on a dealer website. In addition to the burlap HB I also have a black palm stainless HB that isn't pictured. I have tried a lot of the smaller Fiddlebacks and found that the HB suited me best, although I'm very keen to try a Patch Knife and a 3 finger Karda. I guess I've just found the 4"and above knives fulfill my everyday needs better and a couple of HB's to complement them seems to work.

Jules

Thought I'd spend some time this morning posting to this thread. This is the entire collection with the exception of 2 inbound. I haven't sold or traded many, but I have released a few to bring in new ones that I really liked. The pass-throughs were a Recluse, a Hiking buddy, a Sneaky Pete, and a Nessmuk which I gave to my brother. The Recluse and HB were very tough to let go, but you have to let good ones go to get good ones and keep the karma flowing.

Here's the current state of the collection. Synthetics on the top row and figured woods on the bottom

And now for the sub themes. The original theme was blue. Blue is actually pretty hard to come by these days, but I still keep a lookout. Blue seemed to be everywhere when I started. You have to be quick or Skystorm and Kirkwood will shark you!

Next up, the Bushcrafters. My favorite model. Can you tell? I have a few I might switch out here. One pictured is already traded. I plan to continue with these but it is difficult to find the exact models on my hit list and I seriously doubt current owners will relinquish theirs. Very fun to search for them though. My goal is to have more Bushcrafters than willic has Bushfingers. A man can dream can't he? By the way, if you have an old school scandi that is available or know where one is please let me know.

I didn't intend to go this direction and most of my users are in the synthetic group, but these just speak to me. Highly figured wood:

An unintended sub theme, but I plan to run with it when I can. Lime over black (preferably TT). I will note the Arete is my wife's and she graciously allowed its inclusion in these photos, so don't even ask. :D. Someday I would like and Arete of my own:

For future directions there are still some models I would like to try. They are on either end of the size spectrum - a Runt and a Leuku. Hopefully, I can also score ones that fall into the above categories at some point. I'd like to try and combine some of the sub themes as well, such as Bonafide's favorite config - maybe a Bushcrafter in box elder burl, TT, lime over black - which would fit in three of the four categories above.

One thing I will say is that as of 11/21/13 I did not own a single Fiddleback. Since then, I've met and conversed with some fantastic people (many of which have helped me put this collection together even though we might be looking for the same things), learned a bunch about knives, and had a ton of fun on Fridays. This is great forum and community. I look forward to continued participation and I hope I can contribute as well.

Great photos Phillip! Thanks for the explanations of your various themes. You have achieved an enviable collection in less than a year. That is quite an accomplishment. Your Bushcrafter family in particular is amazing.

Thanks for posting the updated family photos.

Phil

That is an amazing collection Phillip! I have been waiting to see them all together. The picture quality is great and I am just stunned by the overall beauty of your fiddlebacks. What a great mix of synthetic and wood handles. Thank you for sharing them with us. Well done.

Awesome awesome awesome stuff Phillip -- you have excellent taste in knives, and your collection has great depth in both models and configs. Well done on all accounts!

Wow, that is one hell of a collection Phillip! I love the variety or colors and handle materials. I especially admire the collections of blues you have. Very nicely done...

Thanks guys. I certainly learned my sharking techniques from the best... ;) I've actually found this exercise interesting. The photos show off things that I didn't see when I look at my knives as group. There are few trends I've noticed that I think I will stick with. Here's the photos of those:

At what point did you start evaluating all Fiddlebacks that you see relative to the preferences of other members, knowing that if you buy it, you might be able to trade it for one in their collection that you want? :D

Phillip, I know that you like to analyze all the sub-trends in your collection (i.e. "black pins", "blues", "Bushcrafters", & "magnificent burls".) The truth is that you only have one theme ---> building a collection containing only ultra-premium Fiddlebacks.

In regard to your last comment, I have said before that none of us can own them all, so the next best thing is to see our favorites end up in the collections of our good friends on the forum. Fridays are exhilarating in a selfish kind of way, but it is the buying/selling/trading deals among friends here after the fact that really helps build strong relationships and makes this place so fun.

You have done very well with refining your collection my friend!

Truer words have not been spoken. Being out-sharked by one of my friends always brings a smile to my face.

I sold off most all of my previous collection a few months back except for my Sneaky and Scandi Kephart. I was finding the woods while beautiful were just to slick to use for me outside. I was able to pick my Woody Woodchuck back up, I missed it. The rest are that last couple months worth of being a beady eyed shark or being lucky in the exchange. Gotta be fast on the refresh key around here.

I'll admit I was initially not really impressed with the Bluebacks when they came out, pics made them seem kind of dull compared to the others. After getting one though I realized that they would be my favorite users, grippy and less maintenance. I have a ton of knives so it can be a chore maintaining them all every week.

Couple of Dylans sneaked there way in.

Wow Skystorm!. I remember when you had the big purge several months ago. You have definitely been very busy since then. Many great additions there. You know that I like the pretty Shadetree burlaps, but your bolstered Hunters are primo examples of that model. Thanks for sharing your take on there Blueblacks. I am still on the fence on those.

You have accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time. Very impressive collection! Do you have two or three favorites from your newer additions?

Phil

Thanks Phil,

If I had to pick three (EEK!) Scandi Keppy, the green bolstered Hunter and it would be a deathmatch for third between the od Bushcrafter or the blueback Bushfinger. The Kephart is my favorite worker thats why I have 3 of them, well 4 now one on the way.

Jeez now that I look at that picture I realized that almost half of them are Trinity pinouts including the one inbound. Subconscious theme.

Goober,

That is a Dylan Fletcher Ulysses. Few and far between, took me a little over a year to get one.

What's that largest knife (with the red liners) in Skystorm's picture?

My favorite is that Woodsman!

I thought it was a Fiddleback I hadn't seen before, but it's an awesome looking knife nevertheless.

Gonna research it a bit more

Nice photo Sky. Totally agree with you on the bluebacks. They've really grown on me. I looked long and hard at your emerald bushfinger, but just never pulled the trigger. The Nessmuk I have is a pretty close match. I really like that config. I'd love to have an Arete or a KPH like that.
