Fiddleback Friday 2/7/14

I am stoked!!! This is one Fiddler I've been wanting since I discovered Fiddlebacks! Elusive! I almost dropped my laptop when I saw this thread was posted so early and I was still late to the party! I'm usually in the process of getting ready for work and/or going in-service at the normal time it goes up .. so I've been missing out on the ones I really want. This Recluse will book-match my Bushcrafter in Box Elder Burl .. yeah, come on!

That box elder is gorgeous! Andy did a KE Bushie in it a while back that was to die for, and that was one that was hard to resist, but luckily somebody beat me to it anyway :)

Looking forward to seeing it in a sheath when you get it. Might need to order a dangler for my Recluse :D

Thanks Michael. Won't be long til your 1st eh?

I hope. Not been the easiest week so far. Few steps forward, few steps back. Know what I mean?

That Kephart is darn near exactly what I thought I'd buy if I could, a month ago. But after another month of looking at pics, I don't know... I'm starting to really like the burlap, especially in orange (though I'm in love with Mist's emerald-handled Nessie, too). I still feel strongly that I want a Kephart, but what handle? 5/32 or 1/8? By the time I meet my challenge (God willing and the creek don't rise!) who knows where I'll be. I tend to over research everything, which usually takes lots of time and looks like obsession to the Frau. But it also means I tend to be extremely happy with my purchases. 😄

Thanks for the thought.

I'm very familiar with the few steps back part!

The Kephart is my go-to knife, I use mine as an edc for pretty much everything (in 1/8). I'm sure after all the analyzing, you'll see 'The Knife' and that will be it!

I agree with Bear that the Kephart is a great edc in 1/8". In the woods I prefer a Bushfinger or Bushcrafter, again in 1/8". I used to be a thick blade kind of guy now I wouldn't buy anything over 1/8". A thinner blade will do everything better than a thicker blade except batoning. If I am going to be out for any duration I carry either an axe or small hatchet, so I really don't baton much with my knife, not that 1/8" wouldn't do the job. For your handle I would use Micarta if it's going to see a lot of abuse or somthing purdy if not. Though I can't seem to pass up DI or coccabola no matter what the use.

You got it Bear! Thank you.

Sorry M4, that knife was claimed earlier.

You got the Recluse Bonafide, thank you!

Sorry Daih, but that knife was claimed earlier. Thank you though. We'll make more...

You can thank the GA Guild meeting for the earlier post. We were hustling all week in order to get out of the shop by lunch so we could get through downtown Atlanta before traffic hit.

As far as I can tell - 2 Hunters, the KPH and the EDC....

The Two Hunters; Which one is the light colored wood handle that looks like Osage Orange? Is it the stainless steel blade or the 01 steel blade? Is it still available? Thanks,

I don't think anyone snagged it; its marblewood and is O1 -- go for it! The hunter is a really nice design and blade shape is super versatile!

The lighter color one is the Marblewood.

Thanks, Chapel. That's the kind of thing I've been wondering. Sounds like you and I might be similar in our approach. Generally speaking, I'm not very hard on my tools. Long ago I learned two complementary lessons. #1) The value of using the right tool for the job. #2) If you've got to be hard on your tools to get the job done, you're using the wrong tool.

I just shot a PM over to Andy to see if he can straighten this out for me and see if the hunters are still available and which is which as far as description of wood handle and blade material. I want 01 steel. I am hoping the lighter colored wood that looks like Osage Orange is the 01 steel blade. The other darker wood looks nice but not my taste. Thanks for the input.

The Marblewood Hunter is made from 01 steel. The Black Palm Hunter is SS.
