Fiddleback User Pics

Had a little bit of spare time today, so out came the waterstones to give my KEB's cutting edge that mirror finish.

Nice!
I like a mirror edge. Here is my Patch in its current state.

Hi Double Barrell what do you use for sharpening? I was thinking of using my edge pro what angle would you suggest for the FB's?

Hey Scotcha. Since most FBs are already convex or semi.. I think that's what they call it. I like to just use a strop. I like a convexed edge though. The previous owner of my Patch had already thinned the edge a little. 1/8", thinned and convex makes It really slicey. I did some minor work with a mousepad and sandpaper when I got it. Strop from there. I guess it depends on what one is using the knife for, but I generally like thinner edges on most of my knives.
I'm no expert on sharpening though. I have a couple guided systems..DMT and Smiths. Haven't used them on my Fiddlebacks. I'm actually just learning the ropes. Luckily, the more I strop, the more convex they get..lol. I also like the looks of a nice high convex all stropped up to a mirror edge.

Thanks Double Barrell. Much appreciated. I use a mousepad and sandpaper for Bark Rivers but since FB's are not full convex I was thinking of trying my edge pro..

In my usage of Fiddlebacks in O1, I would not recommend going less than 18 dps when sharpening. The edges have a tendency to roll if I go any more acute. In CPM 154, I get buy with 15 dps with pretty good results. I use a WE and will typically sharpen O1 at 18, 19, 20 and 21 dps, then strop the facets smooth with diamond paste, giving me a convex edge. For larger knives where thumping is likely, 20 dps is my starting point.

I've normally gone about 15 per side with O1 (even on the Camp) and no issues.. I do strop it to finish though. Andy's O1 feels pretty hard, but I haven't had mine RC tested. My S35VNs are a bit smaller (Bushfinger, Ladyfinger and Recluse) and are all about 15-18 per side as well. Haven't had an issue with any of them.

So what's ur opinion of the Production hiking buddy?

Based on a sample of one,
The production Hiking Buddy has the best fit and finish of any production knife I own.
It is near flawless. A superb example of what can be achieved with proper execution.
It has no discernible seam at the spine, pommel or swell of the handle and the crenelation if just enough to provide good grip without causing hot spots in long use.
The grind is perfectly even, as is the secondary bevel and the edges have been relieved in all the right places.
The attention to detail is as meticulous on this one as any of my Fiddleback's and it is S35VN. (easily my favorite steel)
If I were to change anything I would only suggest a round-over bit be used to chamfer the fastener holes as that would make the transition smoother. A small gripe that has, in use, caused no issues...

I was lucky enough to score a custom shop version that eliminates the chamfer, has killer burlap, retains the S35VN and in my opinion is the ultimate value in a Hiking Buddy.

If cost is a primary concern the production model is where its at, you will not be disappointed.

Thanks buddy! Bering new to FB knives I want them all :) your info please awesome and very informative! Thank You

Just got this one in the mail today. Beautiful!! Not quite using it, and not fiddleback, but wanted to post pictures somewhere.

Bud made mine. But mine has a different blade profile. You can contact him and if he thinks mine will work for a donor knife
I'll give him mine and you won't have to send yours in
