The steel in the butt is twice as thick as the blade, is that unusual?

I chopped up three large cloves and piled them on the blade for a 20 min nap. I made sure the blade was completely covered.

Lavawood
That's normal
Mine has a swedge and is much thinner then the handle at the tip

Yes it does, and you can get really creative with it.

You said it! If one had the time, they could carve skulls, lightning bolts, letters, spiders, pretty much anything out garlic slices and patina those shapes on a blade.

Yup, I am discussing that, and some of the science behind it, in a blog post I am putting on the FF forge website. Here is one of the shots that will go with it, :)

Here is a pic of some quick garlic patina on my new Leuku. It kind of matches the spalting. I wish I would have taken more pics when it was at this stage, kinda neat!

honest question here for folks showing user pics in the kitchen, and truthfully not trolling;

Do you really use your fiddleback as a kitchen knife or just doing it on occasion to develop patina?

I'm curious because I've never had any knife other than a thin kitchen knife that I've enjoyed using for food prep.
Attempted to cut an onion with a recently acquired recluse and it was an awful experience that ended before it began. Then again, I am spoiled with j-knives for the kitchen...
