The Cold Steel Pendleton Lite Hunter!

The reviewer, David E. Petzal, liked the 4116 steel( "I find it vastly superior to the 440 series stainless of many knives") and the sharp edge and ease of resharpening. He liked the sheath too. He made several comments about the $22 price.

Given the discussion that Cold Steel seems to generate on this forum, I was interested to see if you have any comments?

I'd like to see the list of knives he tested before commenting. Did you read this online?

Inexpensive. lightweight, easy to sharpen. Not the fanciest knife in the world, but what the heck.

I have a Finn Bear with the same steel and find it a very good tool.

The article is in the Sept. issue.
There are other knives in the article but not a complete list of all knives tested.

There is a sidebar about the testing which included; checking the bevel and polish of the blade, out of box hair shaving sharpness and the ease of getting it to that sharpness and cutting 1 inch pieces of 1/2 inch hemp rope until the knife quit cutting rope. He then checked to see how easy it was to resharpen the knife.

I used to get Field and Stream. I can't recall ever seeing an ad for Cold Steel in it. I've got a couple of Roach Belly's and a couple of Canadian's and I can't complain about them. Not fancy, but very functional. Especially for the money. I've had other Cold Steel products before... Bushman, Voyager's, SRK. They've never failed me in any way. I can't say the same about other companies including Gerber and Buck.

Go ahead and check, Cold Steel hasn't ran an ad in any magazine for several years. They would rather hand out their "Proof" DVD's.

Dave Petzal is both a hunter and a serious knife guy. Among other things, he has designed hunting knives for Bob Dozier. If he said he liked that CS knife it is because he knows it will work for him in the field.

To be fair, in a previous issue they noted that their favorite folder was a Gayle Bradley. Not a bad knife. It would also hold it's own in a similar discussion here. I am a big fisherman so I like the mag. But their knife comments are funny. Laughed out loud at the barber shop today when i read about the Pendleton.

If you check out the Cold Steel spring catalog 2010 Special projects. It has a "Close out" of the Westren hunter, Long hunter, Finn Wolf all very much like the pendelton. The finn Wolf was $11.95 at a Cold Steel catalog. If they are sellin them for $11 bucks then cost must be about 2-3 bucks! Not much of a knife if you ask me. enjoy edgy.

"Best of the Best" ?

It may be a fine inexpensive hunting knife,

...but the "Best of the Best", :foot: ...give me a beak.

Ya know I wonder just how many here hunt. I bow hunt exclusively and let me tell ya when it's like Nov 10 at 8 p.m. and you have just found your deer or animal far from your stand and your vehicle you will appreciate a knife that can be easy to sharpen if you need to pack out your animal. I've been there and when my 110 went south on me for an edge I looked around for many years it seemed til I found what I had confidence in and that is the CS Master Hunter in Carbon V. Never tried the Pendleton but seems to me it would make a good hunter. keepem sharp

PS don't know about Krupp steel except I have heard it compared to 420, don't care really one way or another as my hunting knives are all carbon steel which is what I personally prefer in a hunter.

Maybe they mean best value? $22 for a good knife is rare these days. If Cold Steel can do it, more power to them!

And if a $22 knife can do 98% of what a $200 knife does....maybe it is a better knife?

Just my thoughts. I don't hunt.
