Fighter Step by Step

Charles, I see you are mentioned and your Boot Knife depicted in this month's Blade "Whats' New" section (pg.68).
Congrats.

To Mr. Vestal - Thank you for an awesome 'how to' , an amazing set of procedures and the end result is stunning.... :)

To Mr. Montgomery - Congratulations on your beautiful new knife. :)

*round of applause*

To Mr. Montgomery - Congratulations on your beautiful new knife. :)

It should get to me in the next couple of days. I can hardly wait to get the chance to handle this beauty. It will be my first Vestal knife and Long sheath, but I'm sure that will change in the future.

Keith, the anticipation must be killing you!:D
Like a man stranded in the desert, with a view of an oasis just over the next dune...

I'll bet!
I'm so stoked for you:thumbup:

Well Charles, it was there when I got home tonight. I've only had time for first impressions, but those first impressions are of a fantastic knife. They say that no handmade knife will be perfect, but this one comes as close as you are going to get. I personally can't find a single flaw.

The sheath is in my opinion the perfect match for the knife. Paul worked his magic and produced and outstanding partner for your...my knife. I'm thrilled.

So folks, my advice would be for anyone looking to get a knife from Charles that they do it before his popularity reaches the point that I'm positive it will. Higher prices and longer waits are coming. It's inevitable.

I would also like to comment that this is a large knife. An 8" bowie never seems that big, but when it comes to this style of fighter, it is big. As large as it is, it has wonderful proportion and tremendous visual balance.

Good to hear the knife made it safely.

Glad you like the knife, and it is a big knife, the biggest I've made to date.

Thanks for the opportunity to make you a knife Keith.

Take care

Charles

Just beautiful! And tremendously informative as well.

Somebody please remind me to never post photos of any of the hack jobs I've done ever again:D

Hi Charles,

Many thanks for posting the thread.

I have a couple of questions.

First is when cleaning the grind up post-heat treat, you jump from 60 grit to 400 grit. Why the big jump? Does it give you better control over the grind, even though it takes longer to remove the scratches?

Second is what is the purpose of the adding the grease to the discs? How does it benefit the finishing process.

Thanks.

It is easier to see the 60 grit scratches when jumping to the 400 grit belt. If you step through 120,240 then 400 grit belts it is harder to tell if you have all the scratches from the previous grit removed.

The belt grease will give you a better finish, It reduces the amount of cutting the paper can do, it sort of polishes instead of grind.

Thanks

Charles
