Fighting a big cat...

"Harry Wolhunter is the guy from South Africa who killed the lion that unhorsed him. His knife looked to me like a 6 inch boning knife. There was an article about this in an old knife digest- maybe from the late 1980's?

It is Wolhuter, not Wolhunter. Here are a couple of accounts of the story, including his own:

http://www.thegreathunters.com/wolhuterescape.htm

The knife achieved some notoriety. It is on display in Kruger Park with one of the two lion hides. Per a note in one of the articles,

"This was an ordinary butcher's 'sticking' type with a 0.16 metre [6.5 inch] blade, made by T. Williams of Smithfield, London. When the firm heard of Wolhuter's exploit, they presented him with a new knife."

The design bears some resemblance to me to the Searles Bowie.

I could not track down a cite, but I recall that when Harry saw originally saw the knife at the home of a relative, he liked it so much that he stole it, leaving a lesser quality one in its place. (One of my wife's relatives did that too, with one of the fine Japanese kitchen knives I picked up in Seki.)

Yessir. That one is gone sadly, but I am thinking about a pup soon. Ever mess with Feists?

I have one, she is a fearless thing, got copperhead bit 2 weeks ago and came out fine.

You know ESPN rated them as the #1 sporting dog in 2006?

My Great Pyrenees is no trained fighting dog and she has killed several coons.

I've seen German Shepherds,Malinois,Dobermann and Rottweiler all kill raccoons in seconds.
These dogs don't compare to a trained catch dog.
Trained Catch dogs grab an animal by the side of the head or in the case of a bull by the nose.
Then they work their hold as to not be injuried themselves.
They protect themselves against the weapons an animal has.
As far as who would win against a big cat that would depend on the individual cat and dog.
A big catch dog that has caught dozens of boar shouldn't have much trouble against a big cat.

My Dogo pup.

my yorkie got loose one time and cornered a racoon against the neighbors house and their fence for about 5min, and another time we let it out into the backyard and she chased down and killed a rabbit that we didnt see that was right by the door, so if my 7lb yorkie can do that im pretty sure any dog 50lbs+ would have no problem taking out a coon

Since the cat is planning on jumping on your back and sinking it's teeth in your neck;a good defense would probably be your best bet. There may be a market here that is untapped. Perhaps a a large backpack frame covering the back and neck ,with a gigantic glue trap in place. Once the cat is mired you hit the quick-release straps to jettison the bugger off the side of the mountain. Or maybe something with airbags...
For what it's worth on the knife idea I'd go with a Fallkniven F1 or S1. That and wearing a WWF Road Warriors outfit might see you through.

There was a show on about mtn lion attacks in Canada somewhere, an island IIRC. One of the attacks was on a girl, 5/6yo and she was wearing a life jacket, the cat pounced on her but only got a mouth full of life jacket and was beaten off.

I remember reading that the Spanish Conquistidors carried thier spears over the shoulder pointing up so the jaguar would not kill them.

Of course, many posts have been written about the concern of the brittleness of D2. The post in which Cliff Stamp said something caused him to be banned from the Bladeforums.
how the hell can u get banned for saying something about a certain steel??

personally i think u'd be very lucky and skilled if u can fight off a big cat with a spear, maybe a sword and shield

but just a knife?thats insane

ahh i just saw that survivor man ep with the jaguar

wow if i were walking in the wild and suddenly heard a roar like that i'd be spooked like hell!!
:D

okay. thers sooo much going on on this forum. a good bred trained bulldog is no more tame than a mountain lion. only you cant get a bulldog off of something by even stabbing its face. they wouldn't let go if they got a hold of the mounton lion. and a wolf 1 on 1 would not fight a bulldog and if it did it would lose. in white fang or whatever the bulldog one. (it was not a mastiff) and a 500 pound buffalo is not a trained bulldog. bulldogs take 500-600 pound animals too, but for fun. and i think i would be walking with a freind with any sized knife, whoevere didn't got attacked would stab the cat dead. so all it takes for me is two me and two knives. and i dont know what all this talk about not being able to stab aroun d my back, but i can reach about halfway down my back so knife length to me doesn't matter.

Never did trust those Scout Masters.:D

Mountain Lions in the bush? I'd carry a short barreled 12 gage pump. Populated area, a guy could securely fasten a Cold Steel Warhead to a strong walking stick. Put a shake off cover on the top so as not to frighten people. Bears and or mountain lions make my ring tight but they don't stop me from romping through the bush.
