File knife showcase

Forged from an Atkins Silver Steel file

Looking at the strands in the OSB, that's a smaller blade than I would have guessed at first- what's the length?
Mighty fine knife, probably one of my favorite file knives ever!

Thanks, OAL is 12 inches. I bought this file in a Pawn shop a few years ago and just got around to making a knife out of it. It made such a good blade that I did a little research and found out that Atkins went out of buisness in the 1950's. They imported the "Silver Steel" from England, it's close to 1095 but with more carbon content. If you should run across one, get it, makes an excellent blade. Dan

Here are a few folding knives made from Nicholson files, blades are just a squeak over 4"
Top one is my first lockback, pretty much copied (with permission) from a Jerry Fisk lockback tutorial. Handle is some sweet ripply maple.
#2 has brass bolsters and what I believe is a curly oak- there's been a lot of discussion with my wood gurus over this stick...
#3 has a wrought iron bolster from the shipyard that was here on Guemes Island (WA) during WW1, same Mystery Wood
BTW, the blades are full length- they look a little short because of the camera angle...
Thanks for looking, let me know if the link to Picasa doesn't work for anyone!

Why files? Because I can and it's cool. The next batch will be cpm154.

Nice stuff!

This one came from a file. In the second pic you can see a few of the teeth left near the habaki.

LAte reaction I know but I have to say these are spectacular. Do I see hammon's on them? How did you do that?

I'm currently working on a series of four file knife blades, but here's one I did a while back.

Like Indian above, I also wonder how these folks developed a hamon/quench line on some of these blades. There's some fine looking work displayed in this thread!

Here are the ones I've done most recently. Three files, mesquite burl, copper liners, and mosiac pins.

beautiful work, sir. Reminds me of a Randall Made fighter. i tried to model my first file knife after a similar piece, you did WAY better haha

Here's a few of mine...I love file knives. I only use the old stuff...love the 50+ year old files for my work.

Even though some folks dislike necroposting, I must say thanks. Had you not dug it up I would have missed and interesting thread. :D
