Filework - An era that has passed? (hopefully)

I neither like nor dislike filework - like other said, it depends. I have to say though that what I've seen of Bill Rupple's work has left me on my butt. Astonishing control and great symmetry.

A taste.

I am quite fond of file work. I have a subhilt and a large bowie from Randy Lee with file work on the blade and I feel it adds to the uniqueness of the knife. Plus, I love Steve Likarich's work which generally has a great deal of file work. His knives would not be the same without it.

to each his own, I guess... but I don't care for it on a number of levels. I am a fan of clean lines, and that's one of the ways I judge a makers true abilities. Filework just obscures fundamental that. Also, file work is entirely overdone these days... and what I mean by that is so may makers are doing basically the same kind of thing in countless variations. IMHO... if you want to make yourself known with your filework, then you better be a master at it. And the filework should be a part of the entire compostition in your work of art. Not just an accent like pinstriping or flames on the hood of a truck. Most filework is just a fancy tattoo on the knife's back. Neat at first, but I don't really want to look at it all the time.
