Final hand rubbing woes

Using tape to prevent scratches on finished work should be mandetory. "you can't make knives without tape" I wonder how many poor bastids have heard me say that?

Another thing you might try to help prevent fish hooks or pause marks is to tip your blade down 10 to 15 degrees off the horizontal. Its pretty hard trying to stop when you are rolling down a hill. Try it through all your grits and see if it helps.

My hand sanding rest is actually an old bar of 1075 wrapped with duct tape and stuck in a Moran vise.

Just a quick preliminary update: I went ahead and sanded up to 600x (from 320 when I first posted this), and this was the most difficult blade so far when it comes to getting previous grit scratches out. I'm hoping that means I achieved a very good HT, but who knows.

Anyway, while I was waiting for my piece of micarta/leather to dry I decided I would try to test out ONeill's method posted above. I looked around my bench for something with some give, and found a soft paint stir stick. I wrapped some paper around it, put it on the edge of the bench, and went to town. This really showed some promise, so I went inside and found a scrap of leather which I wrapped in paper and held on the edge of the bench. Even better results, I think this is going to help me a lot going forward!
