Fire Steel & other Fire methods .. another addiction...

If you're going old school skip the premade kits. Get a rock, bust a couple inches of file off, and burn up a cotton t shirt. Place in leather pouch. Done. It's hard to get the hang of it, but it's fun when you do. I had a kit in scouts, need to find it out of storage.

That looks like the fire kit I carry in my Get Home Bag and also the top drawer of my desk at home. :D

I'll mess with it oneday.... I have the leather pouch LOL

just one?

right now my goal is to use more natural tinders. I'm good with leaves and shavings and twigs and such, but I need to work on stuff that will take a spark or coal.

you should put up more contests and give those out... :D ;D

ask adam what you have to do around here to get a firekit.... :)

As far as the cost... This is the only kit i've come across with such a usable storage area for tinder/ PJCB's. The firesteel.com ones claim to have storage space, they really don't unless you always have the steels exposed, and then they become larger than I like. the esee kits are compact, and store well. I'll pay more if something works better. :)

Po' folks got po' ways. I love that fire kit BTW. :D

The ESEE fire kit are great... The handle is more user friendly, no matter your hand size VS. anything else on the market...

The only thing I'd change about them, is from the paintballer in me. splash anno makes gear work better. I bet some speedy blue would increase spark range by a good 2-3 feet.

I tried a sisal rope birds nest today. Catches a spark great and burns like hell.

Nice collection tony!

Just found my old kit. was missing the file, so i added a bit of hacksaw blade. I remember having another kit with a smaller stone, that one sparked much better than this one.

I have a little more flint and steel from Boy Scouts. Fire pistons are just a year old....they fascinate me. I have several more steels but they are in my cars and kits.

holy moly...that's a lot of fire starters! all you need now is this lightning in a bottle and you have all the fire kits :D

i'm not there yet but i'm slowly piling it on too. while at target, i saw this package with orange bic lighters so i just had to have them. then i ordered two misch metal rods and two more esee fire kits from different sites...oh boy.

I teach firestarting techniques to the troop, I thought I had a lot of fire starters. WOW...
I like the fire pistons for the wow factor, but you have to get a good one and learn to use it. I have a couple that will create ember in tinder fungus or charcloth 99% of the time first try.

I still need to purchase 2 more ESEE firekits..... for more family members as gift.... excellent gifts for Friends & Famliy who enjoy the outdoors
