Fire Steel & other Fire methods .. another addiction...

you take a straw and then run a little heat over one end (I use a lighter) and then crimp that end w/ a pair of pliers; I then fill them w/ cotton mixed w/ petroleum jelly (CBPJ)- take small wisps of cotton and rub a little petroleum jelly in it, stuff the straw w/ a wooden match/toothpick until almost full, crimp the other end and you have nice compact- VERY good tinder :)

Great Idea Thanks, going to make some up now

cool kit MTW,
only mikro thing I have going is a small 1/8"x2" misch metal rod & 2 ea. tinder tabs in a 1"x 3" zip bag ,in my pocket with SAK hiker using the awl as striker....that is my bare kit.

Tony,
you are a pyrotechnic. I think you could open your one store. My wife thinks I am a gear whore you have got me beat:thumbup::D

I have used 0000 steel wool takes an excellent spark and burns really hot. You can pack a whole steel wool pad into a small fire kit.

i carry a ferro rod stuffed in the case of my spark lite. im surprised you guys dont have this in your arsenal. also has some quick fire tinder tabs in it.

I used this method, during Hurricane Gustav, on several occasions.:D

Now I must ask about the 9volt. Did you just put the steel wool against it and it ignites?

0000 steel wool works best. Just rub the battery terminals against the wool and it will start to spark. Blow on it and it will start glowing. Be careful, it gets hot quickly.;)

#0000 steel wool is also great for getting car windshield/windows squeaky clean. i have tons of that stuff back in my detailing days. glad i have another use for them.

Tony you are a camp pyro like myself! Starting and playing with a campfire has got to be my favorite part of every camping trip. I have a somewhat smaller box of goodies, but all kinds of firesteels, mag bars, spark lites and several others that are almost as fun as knives :D

Yes T-bro.... I like building and making the campfires for the heck of it..now it has become a race b/c my son is trying to take my job :D

How exactly do those fire piston thingies work?

Fire pistons work on the same principle as a diesel engine. In a diesel, compression creates heat which ignites the fuel. A fire piston compresses air with a piece of tinder in it, usually char cloth cause it ignites very easy, creating an ember you can put in your tinder bundle.
