Fire Steel & other Fire methods .. another addiction...

Do you have a picture of one of those ESSE in hand? Just came across an interesting Firesteel in tube similar to the ESSE and was wanting to compare it.

There’s nothing more heartwarming than a nicely split pile of dry wood that’s about to warm me up and cook some vittles.

That sir is an impressive collection of fire making items. You would do early man proud and i'd have to say that at least that is a useful addiction to have. You should be able to make fires for lifetimes.

Hot dang nice collection!
I love the triangle Zippo, and I never knew they made Ferrorods/firestrikers (makes no difference to me) that long!

your missing a "micro" kit :) I keep one in my wallet- stored in a small media holder

small ferro rod, mini firestraws, small piece of hacksaw blade

nice kit there man. I usually try to weave a small rod into my Izulas, but I've been lazy lately. My HEST has a few storm matches, a small rod, and 4 little tinder deals I forget the name of. basically cotton.

^ probably tinder-quick tabs- they are great tinder, fluff them up and they really take a spark :)- my small fixed blades (neck carried) I keep a couple (flattened) behind a ranger band- along w/ a small steel

here's my K&M match safe (carried hiking) I just revised

two fire straws, seven REI (UCO) storm matches, small fire steel and a hacksaw blade knife (the thing actually shaves :D- makes for a good striker too)

a mini bic in the pocket and one in the pack, fire is one of those things that a little redundancy is a good thing :)

I was wondering the same thing about the fire straws. Whats in them?

What about bow & drill method ? That is something I have tried and tried, but have had very little success with.

Yeah, Whats a fire straw? Im not sure about burning plastic though?

you take a straw and then run a little heat over one end (I use a lighter) and then crimp that end w/ a pair of pliers; I then fill them w/ cotton mixed w/ petroleum jelly (CBPJ)- take small wisps of cotton and rub a little petroleum jelly in it, stuff the straw w/ a wooden match/toothpick until almost full, crimp the other end and you have nice compact- VERY good tinder :)

I saw those firestraws on edc, Warden. Great idea! I pepper my kits with them now. Best way to carry PJ cotton I have seen yet.

yeah- you can make them custom length to fit whatever your carrying them in and no mess carrying them :)
