First Annual Pay It Forward Buildoff

Mike, I may bid on that knife!

#7 you say? WTF!!!! I'm on #38 right now and am NOT EVEN at your level... Nick nailed it, you have found your calling... GREAT work.

What really trips my trigger about your build is the guard. The way it flows up into the blade and falls back into the handle is perfect! Also, the matching of the texture on the blade and guard are right on!

I may just say my blade cracked during HT!

Thanks Charlie! I will say that without all the great inspiration from fellow members here, this would have never happened. Hopefully the leather shows up today, i have some cool plans for the sheath. I am going to do a windowed sheath with a slice of the birdseye in there to match the handle, and a sewn in copper tip and possibly throat...ish. I will draw a quick sketch so you guys can see what i am rambling about.

Ok got it drawn. Here is a real rough first draft/design kinda like what i want to do.

What do you guys think?

you really captured the spirit of the design Mike, I must say!
Can't wait to see your leather work, that's very ambitious.

Ok almost done with this thing...Man, leather work is a lot tougher than it looks! Here is 6 layers of 6-7 oz with a window and eastern diamondback skin. Still have to make a button to keep the knife snug at home...Then i will sew it, sand it and dye it all up...Dont laugh this is my second sheath...

I don't know, Clean up the edges a bit and some dye and I think you captured the look of the knife real well with the sheath:thumbup:

Thanks Unky! Yeah i have a lot of clean up lol! Still on the fence about the dye...I have some eco flow...but it might be a bit dark... I still have to make a Dan Brown?button? ....eh we will see lol

Looks good Mike! That is a lot of leather and work. Sam Brown...

You guys have all really outdone yourselves! I'm only slightly better off than Michael in that my blade has been started, but that's it. I hope I can make some progress on it and get it done so I don't get left out of the fun.

That sheath and knife arn't that great. In fact they really need some major work to salavgae them. If you want to send them to me free of charge ill be happy to take them off your hands. LOL jk that is EXCELLENT work!!

Ok so i screwed up the sheath....Apparently i just need to buy a sewing machine....I tried to drill the holes on my small drill press....With a bit that small, apparently they tend to wander. So...I started over. I made sure to make all the holes in each piece BEFORE i put it together. I guess never really doing this before, i should have bought a dvd lol. I am not sure if i will window this one...Probably still will, but now i know that it takes some fore thought to make a sheath lol.

I use my press to drill my sheaths, but I stack everything up and hold it together with 2 sided tape. I drill slow and deliberate and get almost no wandering now. I liked the look of the sheath I think if you have the time you should give it another go:thumbup:

I never got on well with drilling my sheaths, for that very reason. Always use an awl now.

I never had much luck drilling stitch holes in sheaths either. Plus, I prefer the look when you punch them because the hole will close back up some around the stitch. When you drill, it actually removes the material and leaves a permanent hole that won't seal up at all. I got a punch from Tandy that you can hammer through the layers of leather much more easily than just pushing it through with a hand awl.

OK, I'm still in big trouble with the deadline, but I at least finally got my blade rough ground prior to HT. Not the prettiest grind, but I was rushing and using a somewhat dull belt that was close at hand. I hope everyone is making better progress than I am!

Mike, that really sucks! I was liking the sheath. I am sure you will come up with something new and just as good.

Paul, It is great to see your progress photos. I am really hoping you make the deadline

Ok i have all the pieces ready to go! Now i have to window it and tool it. I did a lot more practicing on my tooling. I think this one be a bit better than the last. I little different from the last one, but it is going to be cool :)
