First Annual Pay It Forward Buildoff

So, has anyone come up with an "official" PiF 2011 logo yet?... or are we going to let it slide this year?

I forgot... I made a super quick one but probably too simple.View attachment 215568

Cool Ryan...
Just so I can say I contributed... here's my shot.

It's supposed to be an arrow pointing forward... you know... get it? ;)

Erin, that's awesome! You got my vote.
Ryan yours is sweet too, but that arrow thing is too cool.

I thought I'd post a few more progress photos. Man, this is going to be embarrassing if it doesn't work out. ;)

First photo is the blade template glued to the drilled piece of W-2 for initial profiling.

The start of profiling after cutting on the band saw and cleaning up a bit on the grinder.

This photo is just to show the general shape coming together. The handles are still really rough because I'd been waiting on some cheap 36-grit zirc belts from Pops. Thought I'd test them against some titanium. :D

Here the handles have been cleaned up a bit and the blade has been rough-ground. I sketched and idea for the hamon... but we all know how those usually work out. ;) The little galvanized piece is a template for the main bevel. It helps me scribe the sides evenly.

This last photo was taken during the blade quench. Yep, I keep my vat of Parks on a pull-out shelf under my kiln/mill bench. Just seemed to be a good idea.

Right now I've cleaned up the blade a bit, lapped the pivot holes to accept the ~0.25" bushings, and will soon do a rough-fit of the handles. I'll probably end up assembling/disassembling this thing 30X before it's all done... assuming I didn't screw something up.

That is gonna be COOL Erin! Your Logo kicks all over mine... For a second I thought you were cooking a Turkey and quenching at the same time.

Nice set up!

Erin...That is going to be absolutely amazing. Amazed you thought of a bali out of that design....You sir, have me glued!

my feeble efforts are feeling quite...feeble:o
I'm glad you keeners are picking up the slack- and then some!:D

feeble efforts mean there's nothing new to see!

I may actually get caught up with other stuff by the end of the week, which means I'll be able to get my PIF blade ready for HT and sent out next Fri. I hope. Maybe :D

Feeble or not, glad you guys are moving along! I've gotten so far as to scribe it onto the steel... Between a home makeover and people wanting to throw cash at me for kitchen blanks I haven't been able to do much yet...

Still didn't get the grind nailed... May be a straight one from me...

Charlie

Oh yeah, looking forward to more pics...

OK I finished up another a few days ago... this time I did it with Aldo's 1095 so I could try my hand at Hamons (2nd Attempt) I like how this one turned out... It is sitting with the PIF Entry knife in Kiah's hands for some Kiahdex pants.

Lorien I love this design, and am having a blast playing with it!
... Ryan

Ryan, you should just stop now. There's no need to rub it in, ya bastard! :D

Haha I am not rubbing anything in... James I just want to see more photos in this thread, I am glad to see more people moving on this!

Wow Ryan, you've finished 3 already and I haven't even started grinding mine yet! It's not looking good for me to get a knife finished for this buildoff :(

The knife and hamon look great. How did you etch/polish it to make it so visible?

Thanks Paul, I got lucky with the contrast. Just used the Radio Shack "PCB Etchant", 15 - 30 Seconds in, take out and rub with "0000" Steel wool. Repeat until I was happy with it. then windex bath, Flitz polish till black is gone.

I put handles on 3 more last night (Different Designs) I am hitting the Hamon HT pretty well (Knock on Wood) on Aldo's 1095. I have had bad results with other 1095 in the past.
