First Annual Pay It Forward Buildoff

well I just got off the phone with https://www.knifemaker.ca/home.php and ordered myself 12" of O1. I'm going to take part as well.

So, I guess I got skin in the game a little more now. This wasn't part of the plan, but it seems like the right thing to do at this point.

Lorien, what if I hate all of your designs??? :D

My proceeds would go to help a local teen that wants to become a bladesmith buy equipment....... and no, it's not one of my kids, they know better.

well, there is that, Will:D

Like I said, if what you come up with is completely different from the design you get sent, that's fine. So long as you use the bucks from the sale to help someone out, it's all good:thumbup:

I like your cause, Will!

I wanted to say one thing about the attitude of not wanting to make someone else' design as the reason for not participating. I'm not saying it isn't valid, I just want to make a point here.

As a collector of custom knives, I absolutely require being deeply involved in the design of the knife that I'm commissioning. To me, this is part of what custom knives is all about. I'm no big time collector, but I've had several knives made by various individuals. Of course, seeing a pre-made knife that turns my crank might make me want to buy it, but that for me is the exception. I know that a great many of the most dedicated collectors require involvement in the genesis of a knife, maybe not with every knife they buy from the makers they support, but it can help build trust between the maker and his/her client, and lead to the buyer guaranteeing a sale no matter what the maker produces.

Next year, I think I'll begin this buildoff with a design contest and the chosen designs will be used. Does that sound more workable/palatable?

Good point Lorien. Anyone who is a full time maker, or plans to become one, should really keep that in mind. I myself never sold a knife and I know absolutely nothing about this side of the business either form a collector or maker's point of view. I did not know that most collectors designed their knives in conjunction with the maker. That is a surprise to me.

Patrice, yeah a large percentage of custom buyers expect you to follow some or all of their input. It is a custom knife, otherwise they'd just go buy some off the shelf blade. I try my best to work with them but when we get out of my comfort zone or I just don't want to make that dang knife then I refer them to a maker that will perform that work. There are some guys that ask for whacked out stuff and I think most of us kind of pass them around because I've gotten calls from makers asking why in the h##l did I refer them to him :D I've made the same call.

welcome aboard Donald! Thanks for participating

Donald is not able to get started on this project for a bit, and I think it's cool to stretch the timeframe out for him, but also to let everyone else know too. What do you guys think about maybe concluding the buildoff in September? Would that help?

That seems like a long way out, I am afraid Interest will die out over that period of time. My hobbies change so fast I may not even be a Knife maker by then :D

Maybe this ought to be an ongoing thing, people can start and finish up whenever they like. No set date just people stepping up, selling their knives donating to a good cause... Just a thought

so, that means you're in, right?
: )

duly noted, have er!
pm me with your address and 'favourite' design ; )

I am definitely interested in the concept, but I'm not sure I can commit to a June 30 deadline.
Would it be better for you guys if I added another month to this?

It wouldn't hurt. I have a lot on my plate already; in addition I farm out my HT to Peters' so I generally try to have at least a handful of blades ready before sending out. (the shipping alone is a killer when only doing one or two blades; also, it adds two weeks minimum to my lead-time.)

Next year, I think I'll begin this buildoff with a design contest and the chosen designs will be used. Does that sound more workable/palatable?

Not so much "more palatable", just simpler. As I understand it there are currently five things going on here:

Poll on the favorite of your three designs.
Build-off of knives based on your designs.
Build-off of knives based on any other design.
Poll on best knife from each design (or is it best knife overall?)
Charity donation to be determined/run by each maker.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade by any means, but it's kind of a lot to sift through.

James, there is a lot going on with this project, but if we do it the way I anticipate next year, this year's will seem simple in comparison.

The running of the poll during the lifespan of the buildoff is mostly to keep interest in the project, and hopefully to bring more collectors to this forum if only just to spectate. Stacy offered to sticky this thread and I think I will take him up on that offer once the submissions by knife makers to participate closes on April 15. That's the only date I want to adhere to, since it allows me to prepare and mail the designs to the participants all at once.

As for the June 30 deadline, let's aim for it, but if guys need more time then there's no reason to not extend it a bit. This is all for fun and interest and benefit, after all. The poll on the designs will close on the June 30th deadline though. Voting for the knives will start once the knives are done and hopefully that won't be TOO long after June 30.

Including me, we now have 6 makers taking part.

And, to make it clear about the design- makers will receive a to scale pattern shortly after April 15, of their choice of one of the three posted. Once they receive the design, they are free to copy it exactly, or base a completely different design of their own making loosely on what they receive. Or do something in between, it doesn't matter.

The interesting thing will be to see how these knives will be voted on, and whether or not there will be a value in the knives staying true to the design, or a maker's interpretation is favored by voters. Everyone will see the baseline, and have a standard place to start. Where they go from there, well, only time will tell.

Good grief! I'm already confused, now you want to make it more complicated next year?!? :D

I understand that there has to be some kind of deadline; I think April 15th is more than reasonable for folks to chime in with "yup, I can get in on this."

Please check your email at your convenience; I'm unable to pm since I don't have a proper membership here yet.

EDIT:

At the risk of sounding crass, let me say that inviting other collectors to observe could be a huge boost for the makers that participate.

Hi Lorien. I'm In. Always wanted to make a nice bootknife/dagger. Regarding the deadline, there are quite a few guys trying to get things ready for Blade, so I would have to vote for a later date... like July or something, but there should definitely be a finish-line for this.

-M

P.S. one more thing, is it possible to duplicate this thread in the Custom area of BF? Some guys might haunt that area that never come over to Shop Talk.

Michael, thanks for stepping up, and great suggestion regarding the Custom forum!

One thing I'm hoping will occur through this project, is a little cross over between these forum regulars. This can be nothing but benefit for collectors seeking to learn more about making knives, and makers seeking to learn about what collectors are about.

I don't want to get over my head too much, so instead of duplicating this thread in the Custom forum, I started another thread there with a link to this one.

We are now up to 8 makers in total, even the infamous Mr. Wheeler threatened to take part. We might have to stretch the deadline an extra year or two though...:D

The Blade Show is in June & you are starting this 2 months before the show when pro makers are working hard to prep for it.

If you want to do this for more than one year & see participation by other than hobbyist makers Id damn sure take that into account. I see a bunch of poor planning here.

&

Set it up a YEAR ahead of time so it can be worked into their schedules.
