First Emerson custom: CQC-14 Long Blade vs. CQC-14 Production ~ picture review

I also did the same sort of bashing with a RC3 and it took it and asked for more.

*sniff sniff* What's that smell? I can't quite place it. Smells like a... wait, no..... yes... troll?

OMG, what is wrong with some of you...this reminds me of someone that told me when I was complaining about president Obama's policies that "this is the way it is, get used to it or you are free to leave!"

That's not the right way to treat someone that has a bone to pick in a democracy. America is great because it is a democracy and we can express our opinions.

That's the same thing I'm looking for here, is change, I want Emerson to put out a better product for those of us that need it, and that's why I like the fact that this forum and this subforum exists, so EKI can guage public opinion and take it into consideration for future products.

So stop being a fanboy!

"Emerson Knives is known throughout the industry for uncompromising combat cutlery"

Relax bin31z. Nobody is saying that you aren't entitled to your opinion. But the door of free speech swings both ways. You are free to say what you think, and others are free to say what they think about the way you express your opinion. There's no need to be combative.

Emerson makes framelocks. If you're concerned about the thickness of his linerlocks, then the framelock option is available to you on an increasing number of models. You feel that Emerson's liners should be thicker, which is fine. I can't recall a single instance where I've heard of a lock failure on an Emerson, but it's possible that if one tried hard enough, he could get one to fail. I'm sure your concern will be read and considered. But just because you might be willing to pay a bit more for a thicker liner doesn't mean everyone else is. And the topic isn't really relevant to this thread, which should be about how awesome Death Head's new custom is.

And FWIW, the United States is not a democracy (thank God)- it is a Constitutional Republic.

I've been eyeing an ASH :p

That would be an excellent choice. No Busse will ever let you down.

On topic: Man, that is a wonderful custom.
Off topic: knives are for cutting, axes are for chopping trees.

Congrats on that knife, it is beautiful!

His production knives are certainly nice and well worth their price but every time I see an Emerson custom I find my self not wanting to settle for less. :grumpy:

There are also a number of folks out there that can framelock your favorite liner locked knife.

STR currently has my horseman putting a 0.160 inch Ti framelock on it.

But its gonna take about 4 month to come back to me...

Damn, that's a sweet blade. I didn't know a long blade 14 existed, but I know what I'm going to be hoping for at Blade.

I mean, I'm not what you would call a "collector" of knives. I'm more of a user. If you don't respect my opinion because I don't have 100 EKI's, then I would ask you how many of your Emersons do you put to actual hard use? And i'm not talking about cutting tape and boxes and that other BS that most knife collector call "use" of knives.

If I see the linerlocks on production Emersons as a weakness, I dont see why my opinion is not as legitimate as someone who has 100 Emersons that they keep in their closet with all their other "tacticool" gear.

Just for reference, most people say that Kabars are super tough knives and watever and would laugh if I considered them crappy. I just took a Kabar KBD1 out to the forest on a trip and used it to build a shelter as part of a survival training program. The thin "rat tail" tang totally twisted on me when I was chopping down a medium size tree leaving the knife useless. So most of you guys that keep these knives and stuff as part of collection and never let them see the light of day or any abuse, don't judge me because I raise a legitimate complaint.

Well for the record, even though its none of your business.
(Sorry for dunging up your thread with this DH)

I have worked as a chainsaw operator for many years, I also did some teaching of survival skills in that time.
I carried an Emerson exclusively, even with a fixed blade. I suppose that would count as "real use".
I have also taught martial arts for a number of years and put my knives through some farly tough times in training.
I train with fixed blades mostly but if I have a folder its pretty much always an EKI.

I do prefer frame locks for a few reasons but because I understand how things work I have no problems with well fitted liner locks.

Is that "real" enough for you

Relax bin31z.
There's no need to be combative.

Emerson makes framelocks.

All you have to do is hang around here and you'll read of lock failures with Emerson models as well as other models from all manufacturers and makers. Not everyone hits a home run every time at the plate. There are some lock defeat threads in this forum posted by end line users as well as others both Emerson forums and general forums. Funny it seems only in the Emerson forums are these accused of being trolls or of bashing a product by reporting an opinion or concern though.

Emerson dropped the CQC12 and HD7 from their line up. So to my knowledge they no longer offer any frame locks.

In my experience the only guys claiming thinner doesn't matter are the ones making them that way using thinner stock, usually to lighten the weight as the reason behind it but really to lighten the cost to the wallet also. If you want the facts about thinner vs thicker write me and I'll give them to you. Lets keep the politics out of this forum guys.

Regardless of opinion, facts are not often accepted anymore than opinions are especially here and particularly about certain ilks of knives made by certain people elsewhere. Almost akin to a scientist that taints his views by his religious beliefs at times fans of some makes and makers are often guilty of tainting their views by their beliefs also. I believe that is the case here.

I don't see the harm in someone expressing an opinion of wishing for thicker. I do see the harm in some pouncing on that to claim it is bashing which is where I see this thread first showing that its getting combative. I also don't understand the mentality that just because someone voices an opinion contrary to your own that some want to shout troll or acuse one of having an agenda just to shut him up and derail the thread.

To get back to topic and hopefully keep it there hint hint. The 14 with a longer blade is top shelf. Looks like a super model. Thanks for posting it. I didn't even know he made or offered that one.

Thanks STR, that's excactly the point I was trying to make. I really like Emerson designs, that's the reason why I'm even posting in this sub-forum at all. I just wish they would make them tougher, "uncompromising" if you will.

While we're at it, I wish all Emersons had CPM 3V blades as well instead of 154CM, or S90V!

Seems like Spyderco can make S90V mules and S90V Millies for 70 bucks and around 110 bucks respectively. And they are also coming out with a Ti framelock millie soon as well, and I can't imagine that costing much more than a Commander or something and its sure to have S30V. So why don't I just buy Spydies and be done with it? Because Emersons just look so damn cool and have so much interesting history behind them.

I'm just saying, if EKI can make a bulletproof folder with some awesome steel, I would buy more than just a few. I'd pick up a CQC-8, CQC-7, CQC-14 and the list goes on.

as far as if thinner locks are neccesarily weaker i suppose ity depends on who ya wanna believe personally i believe ernie he's never steered me wrong, sure he's the maker i am refferring to who stated the thinner locks arent neccesarily weaker, of course i've also seen sal from spydie say the same thing talking IIRC about the millie, personally i choose to go with those 2 no offense though, if there views could be tainted others could too by other things so like i say just depends on whose story ya buy.

anyone can have an opinion but to state that emerson locks are crap isnt a fact imho.

Well, if we all want to have an argument i'll join in :p

A thicker bit of metal will be "stronger" in that it can take a larger load before reaching its maximum.
On a liner lock I am willing to say you will never reach the maximum load for that liner to buckle (fail)
unless its stuuuupidly thin, has a hefty defect of some sort or that is what you were specifically trying to do.

A liner can of course still slip off the tang and cause a failure but this can happen on a liner of any thickness not just thin ones.
This is where the proper fitting of a lock makes the difference.
Even on a frame lock there is still a contact point, its not the whole surface area of the lock face and blade tang that meet.

I have no doubt people will have oppinions on either side but IMO this is all pretty much down to peoples perception of whats strong and whats not.

I read a number of times that the strength of the lock is only as strong as the weakest part of the lock. On a framelock, the weakest part is where the lock is bent. Note how thin the lock is on frame locks where the scallops are located.
Then again, any lock has to be properly made. Many knifemakers do not make their locks properly. I'm no expert and just regurgitating what I have read, but I've read about angle of the lock face and other factors. I'm way outside of my knowledge base to even be talking about this.
Anyways, I believe that lock failures are usually due to improperly made locks and misuse of the knife.

You guys must be paranoid or something. I can remember not to long ago when everyone was bitching about EKI's liner locks being to thin as in after 2k up to about 2006 maybe, could have the dates wrong. I think enough folks raised a stink that pretty much now all EKI productions have a thicker side locking liner. I didn't read it that the fella was trolling or anything of the sort.

I also know that 98 Commanders bring a premium cause they are in fact bigger all the way around liners included. As for the custom 14 having a thicker liner lock I think cause its a custom folder and that's just the way Emerson makes them. It is a custom after all so it should be a cut above so to speak any production folder he puts out.

As for this particular 14 I'll give ya my wife if you send me the knife!:) It is indeed that sweet. This has to be one of the nicest custom Emerson's I have seen, outside of a 100 with mother of pearl handles and titanium bolsters and yes a nice thick lock. keepem sharp
