First "high end" knife

I think it's the perfect size! If anything its slightly too big. But thats me. For most common tasks, cutting tape, opening packages, opening letters, cutting rope/cord... ect, you really only need an inch or two of an edge. A sharp needle thin point is also more important than people realize. But the full sized handle lets you get a great grip on the knife for making cuts that require alot of force.

I'm in college too. SDSU Engineering. Once the student loan kicked in I had a few extra Gs in my bank account and I've been really irresponsible with it lately. hahaha!

The problem is every one has a different perspective of too big or too small, so hopefully I'll like it.

So, first of, lets all agree that the term "high end" is relative to each person and their individual economic situation, and their obsession with knives themselves. So, with that brief foreboding of my intended conversation, I want to hear suggestions, like every other thread in the general knife section. I'm looking for my first knife around or just over $100 dollars. I am currently obsessed with spyderco, being as my favorite knife I've owned thus far is a tenacious. So I really have been looking at the Perrin PPT, the Para 2, and the Sage 2. I also really like the look of the BM mini onslaught. But I don't want to overlook any possibilities!

So, anyone have good suggestions for an edc knife for a poor college student looking to splurge? Preferably at least a 3 inch blade, folding knife, but other than those specifications, I'm open to anything.

Dude get the Spyderco Delica FFG, they are under 100 and it makes the perfect college EDC.

This was my first thought. The Delica 4 FFG is what has finally kicked my Tenacious out of my pocket. I absolutely love it for EDC.

That said, and going in the other direction, if there's a ZT 0200 to be had in your price range, it's a tank of a knife and I wouldn't be without it.

Relax, cowboy, this is the internet. Lengthy and/or pretentious vocabulary is optional here. Less sylables = better.

As to the Pata 2: yes. Definitely get one of those.

Nah, the OP has a point - all the recent heated threads trolled by individuals contributing nothing more than childish comments such as "butt hurt", "fanboy" and genitalia size.

Also Emerson? I hear so many mixed things about Emerson though, I'm practically scared away just on the off chance I hate it.

I bought this for another 20-yr old gd-son. Bought the Micro-Commander...3" blade in black. I've had a CQC7V; it's a good knife.
If you don't like it, they sell here pretty quickly.

Leave it to me to find the one person in the world that is even offended by proper language. But seriously, you say what you want, and I'll speak like an educated person.

I've handled the Delica and Endura and I love them both, I'm just not a huge fan of FRN Handles. It's annoying to me, and I have no reason to feel that way other than my weird compulsions, but it's the truth! That said, I already have a delica so the edura seems repetitive to me.

Ok guys, i settled my mind, and ordered a sage 2. Hopefully when it gets here I wont regret it, the only peace of mind I have s that I can alway register for a Gold account and resell it with little to no loss if I hate it... BUT I seriously doubt I'll have it.

Does anyone consider the Sage 2 too small?

Actually, for a 3" knife, the Sage 2 is huge. Put it next a BM 707 and you'll see what I mean. The choil and thumb ramp only add to it's feeling of being big, comfy to handle, IMO. I think you'll like it.

I prefer the BM 707 to put in the pocket (it's lighter and it seriously has to be something like 50% smaller in volume) but the prefer the Sage 2 to use (the big handle makes it very comfortable).

Just my opinion:

PM2 - near perfect edc knife and a great way to start w/ nice knives.
Sage 2 - the titanium makes it a step up in materials and it's awesome. I personally like the PM2 better.
PPT - very, very cool looking knife and very fun to fiddle with. Just too heavy for pocket carry for me.
Onslaught - I've only owned the large one and didn't like it anywhere near as much as those referenced above. Too bulky for the thin blade

Take a look at the Caly 3.5. It's one of my favorites. BUT the PM2 just feels more heavy duty.

Good luck and enjoy.

the Sage 2 is a great Starting point. But it always happens once you get one you get another sooner or later.

Got to watch the sage 2. I started in TI frame locks with a sage 2 and before I knew it I had CRK's and striders in the mail. Check out the Greyman DUA, its a tank of a knife and top notch Fit and finish for a very good price for a handmade knife. Any knife in the ZT line will not let you down 350 blems are a sweet deal, same with the blem Blurs.

I'd recommend the Para 2, Sage 2, or an S30V Manix. The BM 707 or Ritter grip would be great too.
Idk where you people are getting your Para 2's either, BladeHQ and other sites sell them for around $120 brand new. Used should be less and if it isn't then it isn't worth it, well it is, I'd pay upwards of $200 it is an amazing knife, but they don't cost that much. What I mean is if you're patient you can find a new one for around $100-$130 bucks. The only problem is finding them. No one can keep them in stock.

Well, let me justify my description of it as being huge for a 3" bladed knife. Here are some quick and dirty pictures of it next to a Benchmade 707 with approximately the same blade length:

The Sage 2 is not only longer, but much taller top to bottom. Here they are open:

But the real difference in the ergos is the length and shape of the part of the knife you grip. Here is a crude attempt to mark that difference (I didn't line the knives up well, the 707 should really be pushed even farther to the right):

Two 3" folding pocket knives, but one disappears into the watch pocket of your jeans, and the other is quite bulky. On the other hand, one has a handle that always feels too small, and the other has a handle that feels just right . . .

I think you'll end up really liking the Sage 2 if it's your first nice knife. It's a big little knife, if that makes any sense.

Sage 2 is very comfortable in the pocket and in hand it feels like a "high end" knife.
