First knife(1084) WIP

Here's a pic of the holes I drilled. I'll finish sanding it and then mess with the handle issue.

So I just finished the heat treat, the oven is hearing for temper. 400 degrees for how long again?

At least an hour; then, do it at least once more. I usually do 3 tempers of 1.5-2 hours each.

Thanks. I might take you up on that offer next time. I need to re-evaluate my ht setup. This makes the process no fun and all stress. I'd rather go clothes shopping with my wife on black Friday then ht like this again. Ugh

Nice work.

That blade style really works well for all around stuff.

Tempered once. Sanded with homemade scales fitted for shaping. Going to temper again when I get home and wrap this WIP up.

I would like to know about your " Homemade Scales " ?
what material and process?
Also you say re-evaluate your ht process, what is it? Maybe we can help?
Looks good for a first blade.

Well the scales was a test for looks. Not sure how crazy I am about them. I've laminated before so I wanted to try a swirl effect withe the cloth. I used fiberglass resin for surfboards. Cut the bandana cloth up in small strips and saturated it in a tub of resin and poured it into molds. They started out about an inch thick so I cut it in half and used the molded sides as the flat end to make a nice even fit against the blade.

The ht process was a headache because my redneck engineered set up fell apart so I had to Rig it back while the forge was hot. I didn't have enough coals so I had th scrounge up some dry 2x4s and sticks. I was just excited and unprepared... Not a good combo. Anyway I have no clue how it worked but I got the blade to non magnetic, quenched in canola and twice tempered. Going down to harbor freight today to get some tools. And then ordering some 5160 or cru forge v. Speaking of tools, what should I get? All I have is a 1x30 belt sander, a grinding wheel, sand paper ( 60-500 grit) and a fine file. I think I'm set on power tools, I'll be making my own 2x72 belt grinder. I like the control and connection to the work that hand tools give me. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the feedback

Okay, first and most obvious thing... it seems that you didn't remove the scale/decarb after HT and tempering... is that correct? If so, you have a layer of soft material on the outside of the blade that will keep it from having/holding an edge. If this is true, you should pop the scales off and finish the blade correctly in order to get a real sense for what the steel can do.

Yea I did, that dark color is gun bluing. I like black blades. Sorry, I should of mentioned that. My fault

Not bad but why not have the scales cover the whole handle?

Just personal preference. I like the look of metal showing through. Next time I'll put a little more handle on it though. I went a little to high. Good learning experience though

The blade came out good but I don't get the thing with the scales not covering the metal. That seems like it would be a hot spot and form some blisters or at least discomfort after extended use.

I was going for something like this....
