First knife - file knife, need advice!

When sanding, are you using a block of wood? If not then do, it will be easier to knock down the high spots that way.

Yes I do, well not with the two last finest grit papers but with all the others I use a block to keep the bevel even and to spare my fingers..

Update on the sanding:
I'm glad too see that I'm able to sand down the deformation on the blade but it takes a lot of time, makes me wish I had a belt sander in my cabin.
As you can see on the second picture some of the "craters" are rather deep but the spear point was a bit too thick and front heavy anyways so I think I will be able to get it as smooth as before even if it will take hours of sanding.

I'd just leave them in this knife. To get that out with sandpaper will take ... forever :)

Bra jobb, Brokkr.

It is good to see how well you take the info and advice given and apply it well. You will do well as a knifemaker.

I would like to see you work in a good steel and make a puukko. Send me an email and lets talk a bit.

I was about to leave them thinking it's my first knife and all but I couldn't stand the thought of having to watch them forever so I decided to sand them anyway. It does take a long time indeed but I think I've made some progress during the last couple of hours. There is that one crater that refuses to go away.. I guess I will just have to keep on sanding, I'm still using 50grit so there is a lot of work to do.

Tack!
I still have the problem finding a place to buy good knife steel around my area, that is why my first knife is a file knife. I'm not too sure about making a puukko since I have 3 of them already, maybe a large one though since they are great knifes. Still need to find a good steel source for it.

I'm finally done with the sanding, I think I got rid of most of the marks from the burnt steel. It's not perfect but I think that is as good as it gets with the amount of sandpaper I have at my cabin.
Now I only need to sharpen it and make the handle. I'm really excited to see what it looks like when it's complete and how it performs!

I'm going on a hike tomorrow to climb Galdhöpiggen (the highest mountain in Norway), so I will post the final pictures in about 2 days.

I would rather prefer something more interesting than oak for the handle, but it's the only wood I have laying around, I think it should do for my first knife.

It's great that the handle material comes from the cottage . Looking forward to the results.

You have 3 Pukkos already but 0 made from your own hand. Then you would already have a sheath for it as well:thumbup:

Back from an amazing hike and the handle is now complete. There are a few things that I'm unhappy with about this knife but I won't make the same mistakes again on my second try at least.
Unfortunately I didn't have enough leather for a sheath so that will have to wait a few weeks until in back home.

Nothing wrong with the look of that knife. Simple and rustic. It definitely needs a good sheath.
