First pictures of the spyderco bushcraft knife

I agree if the price is the same as a koster, why not just get a koster. It looks almost the same, and Dan is a standup guy. Not to say Sal isnt, but im all about supporting the little guy.

As much as I admire Sal I think I'll stick to the amazing knives being produced by the makers on this forum.

Yeah, but you can't get the contours on the Koster. I'd expect the overall quality and resale value to be higher, though.

I'm not going to lie... I'll probably end up buying one. If for nothing else, I just dont think it will make a big splash in the knife community, and I figure it will be disco'd pretty quick (like many of the spyderco designs - i.e. yojimbo, dodo, etc.)

Time to head down to Spydie HQ.

I like the looks of it. I wonder if they plan on doing a convex grind. I know there was talk about doing both grinds.

looks nice but i'm happy with my Enzo.
Will be buying a new Spyderco folder this month though (Tenacious, or Wings or Centofante 3).

Kinda off-topic but what ever happened to the mythical Busse bushcraft knife?
or did that come out already and i missed it?

I have to be honest and say that I prefer the look of this knife over the Koster version, To me the Koster version could do with having a slightly wider blade, that is a little more belly not thickness !
I also think Dan Koster tends to make his handle slabs a little too lean although I'm sure he would provide thicker ones at a price. The handle on the Spyderco version looks about perfect to me. The only downside is the bloody hole in the blade.....WHY Sal WHY??????:(

Thicker slabs would rock on a koster. The spydie looks great, just hope the pricetag isnt through the roof....

I agree with the earlier comment that this version looks a bit too thick. Spyderco knows sharp, they know thin and they know cutting geometry. So I wonder why they went towards the thick camp especially given the perceived overlap they will get with the Hossom collaboration which are marketed as wood/camp knives.

This proto was 4mm thick. The production will be 3mm / 1/8"

Too trendy for me. I'd love Spyderco to release something drawing inspiration from the Companion style of Brian Goode and Nick's [NWA] Camp Knife. VG 10 would be just peachy.

At the same price I'll still take a Koster. It comes in 3V which is superior to O1 IMO.

Yeah the fact that they are doing it in 1/8" is really great.

One of the reasons I really like my Skookum is the 1/8" blade.

I just looked at my Koster. By contours, are you referring to the slabs? If so, Dan's knife has some very nice contours. His widens toward the front of the scales instead of in the middle of them. Provides a very natural, comfortable grip. With your thumb on the blade jimping, which Sal's doesn't have, the meat of the scales are where your first and second fingers naturally fall. Sorry for the crappy pics...did them in a hurry!

I prefer how Dan Contours his myself. You can see here mine is similar to Dans.

It goes in on the sides a little at the front, and at the back near the thong hole.

I have a Koster (with the contoured handles) and have handled the Spyderco proto at the A'Dam show. For me, the grip on the Spyderco was much better. The Spyderco is more of a hand full.

But, that's a personal opinion of course ... YMMV
