First pictures of the spyderco bushcraft knife

Dans are contoured just his stock grips on the bushcraft he makes are too thin for my hands. The one I got from him I had him put 3/8" scales on and then mail to me for contouring to fit my hand and it's great.

Still I'd like to try the Spyderco because the blade is thinner than Dans model and the scales appear fatter.

I just looked at my Koster. By contours, are you referring to the slabs? If so, Dan's knife has some very nice contours. His widens toward the front of the scales instead of in the middle of them. Provides a very natural, comfortable grip. With your thumb on the blade jimping, which Sal's doesn't have, the meat of the scales are where your first and second fingers naturally fall. Sorry for the crappy pics...did them in a hurry!

Yeah, that's what I was referring too. Standard ones are way too thin to call 'em contours, in my hands. Here is what HD was talking about, the [huge] difference between yours and HD's thicker slabs:

sometimes a thin handle is good. Gives a moredelicate knife and for me more ways to grip it with confidence. Allthough a fat grip makes a fisted grip better in every circumstance BUT a tall less round handle wont roll in your hand which I like. Its really what you prefer because there all usefull in some way:D

True. But for a bushcraft type knife at least I want something that has a handle that won't dig into the back of your hand when you are using it for extended cutting.:thumbdn:

Any knife with a boxy shape to the scales with a lot of sharp edges or that is thin across the spine will eventually dig into your hand.

One of the first things I do when I get a knife is to use it to whittle thru a thick limb of hard wood. Something that is going to put up some resistance as you try to cut into it. The square boxy thin handes always dig into my palm.:grumpy:

Of course like you say if you are just using a blade for slicing food or game and not building stuff or whittling then a thick handle is just extra weight:thumbup:

Having handled the other blades in that picture, HD, it gives me a lot of respect for how comfortable the Skookum must be in-hand.

HD - can you name these blades from the pictures - I am very happy you posted this - it gives a good comparison.

TF

Top is a scandi blade I had Scott Gossman make for me and I put the handle on.

Second is Skookum Bush Tool

Third is Koster with my own handle

Fourth is a SWC that I had him make according to my own specs handle by me

fifth is a charles may Swamp Oak

Sixth is a Shing 3" Baby bushy

Well like I said I think my favorite handle wise is the SWC but the Skookum is very close and I take it over the SWC because the blade is not as thick.

The Skookum almost feels too big when you just hold it but when you actually do something with it it feels nearly perfect.

I think the handle on that spyderco top profile wise looks a lot like the Skookum.

HD that Shing is awesome. I love the yellow and black liners! Really sets it off. Those are all really great knives

C'mon then HD, which is your favourite if push came to shove ?

That's a great help seeing your comparison pics Hollowdweller. Your reasons for choosing a handle shape are very similar to mine and hearing your opinions on the Skookum helps make the long wait to get mine a little easier :-)
