First post - How did I do on my first custom knife?

Interested by the rust aspect on D2.

Why is it that bead blasted supports rust better than belt satin or polished?

Think he did get a bit of a whacking for a first post, maybe we should say it's a weird initiation test:D

1. More surface area exposed to oxidation.

2. Micro pits in surface to hold moisture and promote oxidation.

3. Of the many treatments to steel, bead blasting is the poorest choice for rust resistance. The surface is literally ripped open, vs the other methods which generally "smear" the surface, helping to "close" steel pores.

4. Bead blasting actually forces little bits of steel dust back into the steel, again promoting oxidation.

This is not unique to D2, ALL steels including stainless are subject to these conditions. I like the way the beadblasting looks, just have a problem with the results on a using knife in wet/humid environments.

If it makes anyone feel any better see this post by me on another forum a couple of months back. About the same time I joined here looking for further information. I am also a paying member there also.

I thought I had posted there before asking about them, so I thought I'd show the last doubters. Now I'm not worrying about it any more, water under the bridge for me anyway.

I think the knife is pretty cool. Certainly looks like a good deal for the price! What did you have for handle options? I'm personally not really a fan of the green but all black or black/grey would be cool. Anyway, welcome to BladeForums!

I could get any color of Micarta and considered the grey/black combo, but I wanted the splash of color. I would have really liked orange/black, but I do not think that is even made. There was also different wood types available, but I was going cheap to start.

I like the knife. Prefer something a tad bit longer though.

Still a nice knife though.

You posted this in the GB&U,

No, I moved it here. I guess I didn't use the moving truck this time.

:) Well heck, I can't win for losing can I? ;) Thanks for the welcome, I appreciate that. I figured at the time that if I ever wanted to polish the blade at a later time I could. Have not checked out that thought, but it would seem to be possible anyway.
