Fishin' with your Traditional Knives

I borrowed a fly rod a couple weeks ago and finally had a chance to test my skills on water.

I was in WAY over my head. I didn't bring waders, so I was stuck fishing from rocks near the shore. I lost a pair of Ray Bans and had to retrace my steps for 30 minutes looking for them(and found them thank god). I severely underestimated the difficulties when you add water and wind while casting.

Erik, sounds like an adventure. Glad you found your glasses. I like the idea of fly fishing but usually bust out the spinning rod after awhile :D

Forgot to put this one hear from 2 weekends ago. We kept 5 and had a great time.

Nice trout Jeff. You know how I feel about that Oeser, Jered does the shadow pattern so right. Glad to hear you got out.

The fishing was outstanding, for about 2 hours. The rain rolled in and the fish got lock jaw.

Great photo!

I've done plenty of fishing, but never had a chance to go fly fishing. I took a class my senior year of high school called "Outdoor Education" that was half science class (ecology) and half P.E. class. There was a hiking/spelunking field trip, a canoeing field trip, and there was supposed to be a fly fishing trip, but it was cancelled because of weather. I was pretty bummed.

Tuesday's catch and knife carry - still trimming line with the SAK ALOX Minichamp- biggest Hybrid Striper was 9 pounds and the smallest was six - 13" bass in the foreground:

Those are some dandy hybrids Rob. Glad to see you back on this thread. I sent you a text showing a knife you own in the current issue of Knives Illustrated, not sure if you got it. Thanks for sharing your fish pics.

Mackerel ready to be gutted, the Calvin Taramundi is a great salt water fishing knife, stainless blade and boxwood handle with rough texture, it works great with wet hands. Easy to clean afterwards.

They were delicious roasted over the coals and using a slice of good bread as a plate

Im still struggling to figure out this fly fishing business. I know it will all click eventually...
I caught this MONSTER the other day and had another one jump off that was at least twice its size!

Looks like you had a great time, Mateo!
I really like your Taramundi, too. I've spent over 30 years teaching at a school named Calvin College, so those Calvin Taramundis have a special appeal! :D
(I certainly enjoy my Carlos Quintana Taramundi I purchased in Sevilla.)

Probably my last fishing trip for a while, carried my Hampton Saddle Horn. The Corp Of Engineer's a have begun filling the lake back up and the water temps have dropped causing the fish to scatter. Me and a buddy caught close to 100 but only 15 were keepers..

This one was used to get the fillets off.

Chris

Sometimes it's fun closing out the year Chris. I like fall bass fishing but spend more time hunting. But, when the temps drop, I look forward to getting out on the ice!

Thank you Jake. Hunting season is why I won't be fishing much. My wife told me I need to put some red meat in the freezer. I guess I am ok with that:D not to mention we have a thread for that too.

Chris

Mateo those mackerel look terrific, one of my favorites when grilled over charcoal

Had the itch to fish today. I had 4 knives with me today, two fillet knives, my Kerry Hampton Saddle Horn, and the stag hunter in the picture.

Chris

I need to make a trip down there Chris lol.

I planned to get on the ice yesterday but we keep getting these 2 day warmups that flood the creeks, swell the lakes and destroy the shore ice making it unsafe to walk out to the thicker stuff. Maybe this weekend! Not sure what knife I'll carry though....hmmm
