Fishing "survival" skills practice

When it gets closer to time for my trip I may be getting in touch with you for some advice. I have just over 3 1/2 yrs. until I retire. That trip is going to be my retirement gift to myself.

I don't get to the coast very often and we don't have anything that looks like that here in Oklahoma. We do have our share of ugly fish though.

As much as I love to fish I usually do it alone. Because of that, I don't have many pics of me with the catch of the day. The only pic I have right now is this one:

This pic was taken at my brother-in-laws pond in SE Georgia last summer. Yeah, thats a Busse Combat blasting cap I'm wearing. Don't judge me monkey. :p

Barberfobic, I think I know those guys! If that was a bowkill I know I do. Those are some tough fish too. They aren't exactly what you would want to go noodling for.

yea, i tead the caption with the pics, and it was a bow kill. they shot it three times.out in broken bow lake.

I thought so. I'll have to give that guy on the right a call. I know he bowfishes but didn't know he got that. I don't see him often but I would have expected him to brag a bit about one that size.

Southern Cross. You caught all those carp on a flyrod? That sounds like great sport.

Im probably the best fisherman who ever lived.

I've been dropping the hint to my wife for quite some time now that I want an Alligator Gar trip as a Bday present one hear. Those things look like a lot of fun to catch.

Great thread - I'm planning a short trip around a local pond in the distant future which will allow me to try fishign with alternate means of tackle.

Southern Cross, I got to know. What kind of fly did you catch those carp on? I want to try that.

Whoa, nice Musky. KGD fourth picture. What is that? Looks like a creek chub.

Hi dipbait - it is a whitefish. Perfect fish for smoking. You and Tony had a bunch of nice fish shots too!

If you get the chance, get out there and do some fishing. Some of the lakes had some pretty good fishing. And the scenery out in the wilderness is great. Just make sure you're in shape, I've never been on so many STEEP trails! I'm going to try to get out there again next year and hit the lake with big cutthroats a couple of times. We caught some of the smallest fish I've ever seen on that trip--got a couple brookies almost as big as my index finger.

Man, all this fishing talk is driving me nuts. The ice is too thin for ice fishing right now. With a warm week coming up, I might be able to try for some ice-out catfish. Never tried fishing ice-out cats this time of year, or ever for that matter, but it's worth a try. I need my fishing!

EDIT: Here's another interesting fish from an interesting spot. From the Titcomb basin in the Wind River range. This is a golden trout, or mostly golden, at least.

I normally go solo, and when a camera is to be had I'm usually the photographer (so I have very few photos of myself), but fishing is probably my first and greatest love.
