Fixed blade camping knife that you actually use

This NRA Snody from Benchmade is one of my favourite EDC's and comes in at well under your budget !!!

$80 bucks?, for practical camping?

Leave the sharpened prybars at home...

Wetterlings Hunter's axe. About 13 inches long and just over a pound. It will chop, limb, fillet a fish, and cut your meat for you (small and light enough you can choke up on it). Use the back side for hammering tent pegs, smacking your fellow campers over the head if the leave the tent fly open, etc. Rides on your belt. A poor man's GransFors Bruks, $35!

Lots of options for the knife. As mentioned, one of the Scandinavian brands for under $50. Helle, Frost, or Mora (these all make great whittlers). That AG Woodswalker (small but very useful) is suppose to be great too, although I have not handled one of these. A Grohmann can be had if you look hard enough as well. A proven camp knife that has a great profile for food prep.
There ya go, I just spent $80 bucks of your money, it was my pleasure. :D

Good Luck!

I'm going to add to the Mora suggestion. I backpack a lot and I like knives a lot, but 20 miles into a hike you feel like chucking everything out of your pack that you don't absolutely need. I have everything up to kurkri's but I rarely take anything but a Mora or maybe another type of neckknife- my oldest camping knife is a CKRT drop point stiff kiss- and maybe a small, cheaper folder like a Cold Steel Voyager. I've tried carrying various Beckers and, while they actually work well carrying under a pack strap, they just don't seem to get used very much to put up with them slapping my leg. I find that you can find enough branches to start fires without using any knife (and I rarely make fies) and otherwise, I just use the knife for cutting. When I feel the need I take either a small Gerber axe (the very small one) or I just got a small Marble's double bit- both will honestly out chop most knives for what I do. Of course, all this is another matter if you are carrying the knife because it is your newest toy.

Take a look at the Grohmann DH Russell knives, they are very well made full tang knives that cut very well and don’t cost a whole lot (they are even available in easy to build kit form). The only down side are the factory leather sheaths which I consider adequate but should be better to match the quality of the knives.

I like my Cold Steel master hunter and they make it in San Mai in your price range. My next choice if you wanted to go over $80 would be the
Falkniven A1 or the Ranger. An SRK would be in your price range and a good knife too.

Mora or puukko from www.ragweedforge.com

Mora's weigh nothing compared to the knives you're being suggested and cut worlds better. If you say you have a hatchet and don't need to chop, then why carry an extra pound of steel just to have a full-tang knife that doesn't cut as well and is too short to chop effectively in the first place? Mora knives are very popular over in the wilderness forums and for good reason. I've been batoning with my mora and puukkos since I got them, so don't let anyone tell you they can't take what you can dish out.

Get a Fallkniven Blade blank and make your own customized camp knife. They're inexpensive and are the same high quality as the rest of the Fallkniven line.
Or the Ka-Bar impact line.Single piece 1095 or D2 steel knives with slab handles.tough and not too large.I personally like the impact warthog.a fine light chopper and you can skin with it as well.

Tolly,

You got any specs on that TFI knife? What's the blade thickness? .250? Does he has them in a 4" version too?

Thanks

The TFI is hopefully going to be coming out full production later this year. Just not sure when I can fit it in right now. It is indeed 1/4 inch thick 5160 with the canvas micart handles just like the RD series.

I guess you could have a shorter/thinner one if you ask.

Helle Fjellkniven or Mora 2000.

Leaves you with money left over for a Folding Saw or a Wetterlings Axe.

Or you could get a Fallkniven F1.

Queen Cutlery make fixed blades in addition to their extensive folding range.Might find something there that appeals?

PJ Tomes MS

I find this the handiest size for the kind of camping that the OP & I do.
Also got alot of use out of my Dozier Personal Ute as well.
The Tomes is a bit more than $80 but real sweet.

Good Lord man... where did you get that stag for the custom mod on the Brusletto?
Gorgeous! Nice work.

I'm just astounded by that TOMES, the scales:thumbup:

Must come costly though:eek:

I looked at the PJ Tomes website and did some searching since I first saw that photo of yours, but no luck. There were one or two that were close, on his site, but most were clip-points ...and other things I didn't like.
So,....:D ...if you ever want to sell it...:D

Isn't the Spyderco Moran a contender here? How would it rate compared to the Helle's and Mora's, for instance?

cat, I bought that from PJ, off his table, at a show.
I'm sure if you really wanted one an email to him with my photo attached would help a bunch.
Or a phone call :D

The knife is a couple years old, at the time it was under $200, well under.
I don't know the prices now.

The stag?
I bought that at the NY knife show as well.
Dug through a bunch of boxes to find that one!

Thanks
:D

Thanks. It is a case of if I really want one. :D When it comes to deciding I start thinking of all the other knives I'd like.
That PJ Tomes of yours is about the best utility type knife I've seen - my opinion, my taste. It's plain, no blade coating, simple.

Nice photos. :D ...I keep looking at them. The Jarvenpaa's awesome. There's something about puukos with unpolished blades that makes them users even if they're not inexpensive. I can see that the plastic handled modern scandinavian knives are really users, but I'd use one of the expensive ones like the Jarvenpaa without worrying about it.

Looking at your pictures, I've been thinking about the similarities between the Scandinavian style and the Japanese style. :)

Under $200, when you got it,...and the prices of knives like Jarvenpaa,...is not bad, really. After all, I paid $150 for a Spyderco Fred Perrin, for instance.

Rangers are great knives, but I think you'll go over your imposed limit. Within your limit I'd get an Ontario RAT3 or RAT5 (in 1095); both are available under $80. In fact the RAT3 is under $60.
