I have always carried a folder as my EDC. At various gun/knife shows I've noticed several people with neck knives, but who actually carries a fixed blade as an EDC?

-do you prefer it to a folder?
-do you ever run into issues because of the fact it's a fixed blade? (From the general public or co-workers)

I sometimes EDC my Izula. It is generally completely out of sight though. And frankly, it is way smaller and more sheeple friendly than most of my folders.

I've carried both a fixed-blade and a folder for several years now. My fixed-blade (Wilson model 25) has a thick D2 blade (almost 1/4" thick). During my last two jobs (warehouse/shipping, light construction) I used my fb for heavy-duty cutting (thick plastic packing straps) as well as light prying (opening wooden crates, prying pieces of wood apart).

My co-workers never said a word about my fb and although a few people out in public asked questions about it (simple curiosity), and although several cops have seen me carrying it, I have never heard a negative word or had a negative experience because of my fb or any other knife I carry.

Although I no longer need my fb for work (I'm now self employed), I became accustomed to always having it with me. And on the rare occasion I don't carry it, I feel naked without it. I like having a stout cutting tool with me when I am out in the world, even here in the city. Although I don't expect to NEED my fb, I feel a little sense of comfort knowing that I have a tool with me capable of both heavy-duty cutting, and prying. And every now and then it proves to be unexpectedly useful.

I live in a small town in Central America and there are no rules about what you can carry. Hell, it's not uncommon to see guys in town with a machete on their waist. That said, I have tried carrying some fixed blades and I just don't care for it. They are less comfortable for me and I never find myself doing anything with a knife that is "too much" for my folders. The only fixed blades I use are in the kitchen.

I have had a fixed blade EDC on me every day for the last few years with no problems at all . BUT it's not a big hunting knife . It's this

It's a Busse Magnum Bear Cub . 6 5/8" overall length with a 3' blade made of .156" thick INFI steel .
It's compact and fits in my right front pocket well . It's not a scary looking knife that frightens people , but it's a very well made and tough small knife that can handle more hard use than all but the very biggest and toughest folders that would cost much more .

I never carry a folder any more. I carry a Carter neck knife, one of several small fixed blades in a pocket sheath in my weak front pocket, and one of many 4" fixed blades in a pocket sheath in my strong hip pocket. Only folding blade is in my Victornox Spirit Plus MT. I started this several months ago. I don't think I will ever go back to folder carry.

I only carry folders when I'm in the city or some place where they are clearly forbidden. Fixed blades are, in my opinion, superior tools. They don't have complicated mechanisms to be strong, they are easier to clean, etc. Their only disadvantage, in my opinion is that they are illegal in some places or not socially acceptable (I can teach a class at uni with a huge Talwar XL in my pocket while a small fixed blade on my belt would not be acceptable).

I've found 4 inch blades to be about ideal for my needs, sometimes I use something a bit smaller and sometimes a bit larger (say, between 3" and 5"). I don't really use "neck knives" because most of them don't have a good enough handle. I'll occasionally carry an Izula or BK-11, but I much rather have something with a full size handle.

I still think folders are cool, and own a lot of them (and will of course keep buying more). They are easier to carry in the city, pocket fixed blades are nice but usually tiny (with handles that aren't suited for hard or lengthy use) with a folder you can still get a nice blade length and handle size in a very compact package.

Bark River Little Creek 3v or a BK14 are often with me. I always have a SAK, but the 2nd blade can be fixed or folder.

I carry a small fixed blade in a pocket sheath in addition to a folder. I'm more likely to abuse a fixed blade than a folder. Plus deployment is much quicker.

I EDC one to two fixed blades and haven't left the house with out at least one in a long time, I carry every thing from a bk9 or 12'' ang khola khukuri to my Swamp Rat Rodent 4'' or a good old Ka-Bar, and yes I carry them to work, walmart, gas station, ect. Also carry one to two pocket knives but if I had to chose I will ALWAYS go with a mid sized fix blade (4 to 6 inches) as an EDC, but thats just me and I live in Kansas which has killer good knife laws, I have gotten a few comments mostly like "Now thats a knife" kinda thing even had a cop tell me my bk9 was cool, so nothing negative so far. Why you may ask? no real reason I just love fix blades :)

Absolutely - I EDC a fixed blade all the time - a BRKT Necker or Necker II:

Around the neck, of course. And, if I'm headed to the woods, then I add a Bravo-1 on my belt.

I always have a fixed blade on my belt when I'm not at work. Sometimes a folder with it but usually just a multitool. Sometimes a second fixed but that's rare nowadays. Folders or pocketable fixed blades at work, can't carry a fixed on my belt at a restaurant.

I prefer them to folders and have gotten one or two weird looks. No bad comments, about them or really any at all for that matter.

I just got myself a lon Humphrey whitetail and a ksf pocket sheath. I still carry my folder clipped to my pocket and put the pocket sheath and whitetail in my left front pocket.

Lately I have been thinking about carrying a fixed blade, but just can't make up my mind on which one. Going to start with an inexpensive piece to see how I like it. Probably going with a Boker Plus Krein PSK. Going after the BP Krein Bulldog also but it os probably too large for a comfortable edc. I can only walk with the aid of a walker. Many places I go into have electric carts which I use. I think I may be able to get away with carrying the larger Bulldog since I sit more than I am up walking. Plus I just don't go to a lot of places during the day.

I sometimes carry a small fixed blade when I'm out and about. Mine is a Dozier Personal custom (K-32 I believe) in CPM 154. It has the wharncliffe blade design and is sub 3". Dozier horizonatl kydex sheath makes it easy to carry and nobody notices it.

The noticing thing is mostly in your mind. I was experimenting carrying a Dozier Wilderness Guides Knife (~4.5" blade) with a traditional vertical belt sheath. Nobody even gave it a second look..

I don't carry folders anymore unless some social engagement or legal issue requires me to.

I carry an ESEE Izula, ESEE 3 and an Oakleaf (now Stitch knives ) "Acorn" that's a 3" drop point similar to the Izula, but with a scandi grind and ELMAX treated to 62 HRC.

Most people never even notice them. I was just at a grange meeting the night ebfore last and used the Acorn to stir my coffee several times, and this was in a room full mostly of senior citizens. No one batted an eye.

I just prefer fixed blades for the simplicity, they feel like a tool on their own whereas folders feel more like a knife attached to a mechanism, more like a machine than a simple tool. Plus I always get finicky about getting gunk and stuff into the moving parts of my folders, so I wouldn't want to stir my coffee up with one of them :P

The only time anyone ever had a problem with my Izula was when I had accidentally left it clipped to the outside of my shirt. A cashier at the pizza store commented, "You might not want to carry your knife on your shirt like that, because of the whole Aurora thing," referring to the Aurora theatre shooting in Colorado.

I've carried a FB for quite a while now. Most often an Essential, so it's not too big or obvious. Rides crossdraw at about 10:00. My waistband is usually covered by a t-shirt or an untucked longer shirt. The Essential also fits nicely in a pocket sheath if I have to go somewhere in a suit.

I'll usually add a folder for using in public view. A BM 525 or micro-Commander works well and doesn't raise an hackles. The FB gets the bulk of the use, though, and always gets carried somewhere.
