I used to carry a swiss army knife. I still do some times. At one point I carried both the swiss army knife and a folding lock blade, I had a few over the years. Then I started carrying a folding replaceable razor instead. I've always liked having a dedicated "knife" and not a multi-tool for when I need a knife - and that is most of the time.
One of the backpacking trips I went on we had one of the guys in our group (who I kid you not - took his shoes off and hiked the 3 days barefoot 99% of the time) had a fixed blade knife and showed us some good bushcrafting stuff - and split firewood in camp with it and another log. I was impressed.
At that point I started looking in to fixed blades. My first one was a SOG Seal Pup. I used it for about a week EDC in my backpack and that was enough of that. I still have it, but in all honesty I believe it is a terrible knife. I should not have spent the $60 on it. After that knife I found I wanted something a LOT smaller. So I researched blades for a while and ended up with an ESEE Izula II - 1095 steel. This quickly became my very favorite knife. I used it a TON, sharpened it a TON, and it rarely went a week dull. Then it got ripped off (long story).
Ever since the Izula I have EDC"d a fixed blade. I bought a BRK Bravo Gunny in 3V to try to replace the Izula. I wanted to try the 3V steel and I really liked the form function of the Bravo but I wanted a "smaller" knife. The Gunny version has all the same qualities of the original Bravo I, just scaled down, and it really is an all-around fantastic knife. Though, it is too big for EDC - even in my old work environment it drew too much attention.
So I bought a BRK Bravo Necker I in 3V to add to the collection. After my use of the Gunny I became a bit partial to the 3V steel. I did a lot of tower work then, which is where my Izula II got most of its' work out, among other every day uses, and the 3V held an edge magnitudes longer than the 1095. The Necker I at the time was a perfect knife - it was the same size, or very darn close, to the Izula II I lost and was 3V. The Necker I is what I still carry every day today. I just sharpened it this week to hair shaving sharp again. That, to me, is rewarding. It is a tool I enjoy using, and I enjoy maintaining it as such. When it doesn't cut right I have only myself to blame. Then when I put the work back in to it and I get to use the results - that's a good feeling.
So long story short - yea, I EDC a fixed blade. I wouldn't change it. Where I work now I can't belt carry it (slacks/dress shirts every day) but a leatherman finds its way on the belt most of the time and the BRK Necker is in my coat pocket or my backpack - always.
