Fixed blade for EDC?

I carried my Survive GSO 4.1 for several months without any issues. 4" blade, decently thick stock you could use it for almost anything. The kydex sheath it comes with is fantastic and ideal if you want to IWB carry it. Very thin and hugs your body so the knife doesn't print, It was very comfortable to carry.

I hear the new esee 4 with the clip is also great to carry. My izula is great as well and is typically what I have on day hikes. I did sell my 4.1 mainly because I didnt want a carry knife that needed as much care and went back to something a bit weather resistant as I use my knives for food prep daily.

GRUNT, that is one awesome looking setup! Gonna have to look into that combo eventually.

Thanks JK, not sure why it's posting double pics. I'm new to the forum and still trying
to figure it out.

These days I have been compelled to move back to small folders in my EDC rotation for various reasons but I have always preferred a good FB for EDC for all the reasons outlined in this thread.

One I would have to reiterate is that most non-knife people that I know back in India and in Dubai appear to be less taken aback or bothered by a small FB than a folder. I suppose its the reaction to the flicking open of a folding blade that bothers them but even when I take it slow, a folding knife seems to create a different impression.

Boker Krein Pocket Bowie 5.5" OAL in pocket Kydex sheath
Tops Knives MSK 2.5 - 6.125" OAL in custom leather pocket sheath

I would focus mostly on the OAL that you can comfortably fit in your pocket. Once i figured that out and decided on how i would carry it, it was easy to weed out the knives you want and dont want. I feel like i can rely on fixed blades more compared to back when i EDC'ed folders. Fixed blades are a thing of beauty to my eye, more than any $400 folder. I confess the matter is truly subjective and i only voice my opinion. Try it out though. Good fixed blades can come as cheap as $20. Don't mind the name brands. Just get a knife of suitable length and enjoy carrying and using it everyday. Hope this helps.

I like the ~8 inch fixed blade for Pocket carry. I find this length has full size handles and good size blades. I pocket carry a fallkniven f1, spyderco mule team 18, spyderco street beat, Schrade sch14, and occasionally an izula 1 or 2. The handles stick out of my jeans pocket by less than an inch, and are very comfortable to carry.

TOPS Ferret for me. I think there is only advantages to be had when carrying a fixed blade for EDC. I pocket carry mine and love it.

I carry 2 1960s/1970s vinatage USA made Kabar 1232 hunting knives every day, 1 left side and 1 right side, when I'm not working on the farm and bigger knives around the farm.

At about 4.25 inches, the blades will cut just about anything I need to cut and are not as intimidating-looking as bigger blades. They are also reasonably priced on fleabay if you don't need pristine NIB quality.

Why 2? That's a combination family history and practicality. If you need to cut something "RIGHT NOW", and the hand on the side your knife is on is engaged for whatever reason, you are SOL.

On the rare occasions I get questioned about carrying 2, they get that as a blunt answer and then they get the family history story as backup.

If some doofus makes a legality comment, I have taken to just telling them

"If it was illegal, I wouldn't be carrying them." & then ignore them.

Beautiful knife and sheath combo Grunt!

Just a general question about carry location. I have been thinking about carrying on my belt, probably right side over the hip. The knives I am thinking about both have kydex sheaths, so I would try to have the knife cant towards the front a little. Is this a good way to do it? I am reading about pocket carry with a KSF sheath, but I'm not sure if that would be comfortable for me. I sit 95% of the time I am awake, so belt carry seems more logical for me. But how many of you belt carry your fixed blades, and do you find it works well for you? Also where on the belt do you wear the knife?

As I said in my other post, I am going to start out with a couple of inexpensive, but well made with quality materials, fixed blades. The Boker Plus Krein PSK, and the Krein Bulldog. The Bulldog is the largest one with a 3.5" blade and a oal of 8.0".

What I often carry.

almost always. carried a classic kabar for years and since then esee 3 and izulas in urban areas and the four when I lived I'm the sticks for awhile. an assortment of cheap colts and bucks over the years as well. lately it's been a Lauri pt that a maker on another forum handled for me.

I don't even notice the ksf in my pocket, sitting or standing it disappears. My edc is only about 6 inches oal.

I do. I wear my Essentials on my left side at about 10:00. They are set up for RH crossdraw so that works very well. They lay at around a 20 deg angle from vertical, slanted forward. I also have my BK14 & Izula sheaths set up for horizontal belt carry, same location.

For years i carried the CRKT ringed Razel for work, in my front pocket and absolutely loved it..I bought the knife just because i thought it was different and i'll tell ya i really worked this knife out. CRKT discontinued the knife but i really wish they would put out a better version..better steel etc,etc,...

Today, as I got out of my truck, I was looking down at the fanny pack I had on. I wear it so that the pack is on my left side at that 10:00 position you mentioned. The way I wear it, it drops down a bit and I just thought how well a small fixed blade might ride on my belt in that position.

I am going to start with a Boker Plus PSK and see how it does and even if I like carrying a fixed blade.
