Fixed blade knife survey

If allowable under these "rules"......

No doubt, the BK&T PATROL MACHETE. If that were not allowable, probally the BK&T MAGNUM CAMP KNIFE, or the BK&T BRUTE.

But I would bribe the judges to let me take the PATROL MACHETE ;)

Another vote for the Battle Mistress. I love my NO, but would want the longer blade for chopping (I always carry a hatchet on my pack).

Ha, I'm going to order one of these soon (probably this Thursday), and get an ETCS rig for it. I owned a Brute, which was an awesome knife, but was a little big for my hands, and shifted in my grip on impact when chopping. Handled the PM awhile back, and it felt much better. Guess that small difference in thickness made a big difference to my hand.

CS Recon Scout factory second. It's a great compromise between chopping and cutting. Looks great, too!

My TOPS Anaconda 9(tanto point),my TOPS ATAX, My Rob Simonich SRT Kukri, and any three of my ATC Tomahawks!!!:p

It's hard to chose one, based on the unknown terrain, mission etc.I would take either my CRK Mountaineer II Or CRK Project-I.I also like the Busse SteelHeart-E,but it is not in my inventory at this time.

Without a doubt, it'd be my Strider Knives Model PAB Mod-SOB. That's right, it's a real SOB (just like me.) ;)

Imagine a blade that's bigger than a Busse Battle Mistress, twice as mean, and three times as sharp. I can split coconuts in a single chop all day long. (That's probably only good on a tropical island though.) :)

I'd take my Bob Dozier custom Model #6 (5-1/2" blade with guards). It is not a chopper, but it does everything else well and appears to be indestructable.

1st choice: Broadwell Custom 5 1/2" utility/hunter. Slight drop point, slight recurve, flat grind, designed as a hunting/camping/everything-in-one knife.

2nd: Denning drop-point hunter - Model 6.

Brian_T,

I don't own a Battle Mistress, so I'm not trying to argue you with. I'm just curious why you say that the Strider SOB is "three times as sharp." I've seen the Strider knives many times and admired them a lot. Is there something special about the edge geometry or hardening that makes you feel they are that much sharper than the Busses? If so, maybe I need to buy one soon!

Thanks for your thoughts,

DPD.

DPD,

No sweat.

I've got a straight-handled BM and a BM-E and they just can't touch the edge on the SOB from Strider Knives. I don't know what the angles are on the Strider (I don't know if Mick and/or Duane know either--I've asked) but it's the sharpest blade I've ever handled in any size.

The BM/BM-E are both very scary and when a 9.5 inch blade shaves hair, one SHOULD be scared. The SOB is so sharp that I cut myself to the bone on the inside of my knuckle while I was wiping down the blade after chopping coconuts and wouldn't even have known if it wasn't for the blood dripping on my shoe. :)

I certainly can't make any blanket statements about how one company makes a sharper blade than another but my SOB factory edge IS sharper than either the BM or the BM-E factory edge. How's THAT for non-scientific data? ;)

They're ALL great blades but if I had to choose just ONE, it'd be the SOB...or is that I'D be an SOB...or maybe both...see, the knife and I have something in common. ;)

Brian_T,

Thanks a lot for the comparison. Since you own both, it certainly sounds like you have a practical basis for your opinion. When Blade Show West comes around, I'll stop by the Strider table and check them out seriously.
