Fixed blade or Folder ??

really? really?

as for the topic. I would prefer to carry in my pockets on a daily basis a folding knife. That is the whole reason for the existance of folding knives. Although I wouldnt mind carrying an rc-3 if I had to have a fixed blade for cutting food or w/ever.

as for this self defense business; that has its own section.

My goodness, Pillowtalk...haven't you gotten your panties bunched!

If you want a knife recommendation...I say fixed blade...The Spec Gov Tac Dark Mil Overcompensator 2000.

Its black, and has lots of pointy things sticking out of it, plus lots of writing on the blade.

Sounds perfect for you.

In the mean time, relax, yell upstairs to your mum, and have her microwave some HotPockets for you.

Pillowtalk, what's the issue with the folder? (or are you asking if people think there is one?..)

And you do realize that Aquatec T-Rex of yours is a dive knife, right? Thats an excellent choice.

I don't know how many times I've gotten in knife fights underwater.

Enough of the trolling on both sides.

To try and contribute to the original purpose, as a concept the folding knife is a compromise. Anyone who uses a knife enough, for any purpose, eventually has to question if they use it enough to warrant the extra hassles of carrying a fixed blade instead of a more convenient but more complicated folder. In the SD department, it's a matter of the local laws, which can rule out double-edges and fixed blades in some areas. Chicago has a three inch limit, so I grew up with blades that small, and eventually switched from folders to small fixed blades for the simplicity of it.

It's still a niche market. The average soldier and officer gets by with a folder, according to dealers around Fort Benning the most popular Ranger's knife is a 420 stainless little thing that sells for under twenty bucks. War is a blue-collar gig, and even elite units operate on a tight budget and rarely bother with customs and modifications that can't be done with power tools lying around. They don't need a hand-made miniature sword with Latin engraving and super-steel, they need something that will work, and is cheap enough to get a few of.

wow, that's beautiful, what is it?

to the O.P. - alex hit the nail dead on the head when he said (whoa i'm rhymin) that a folder is a COMPROMISE. if you anticipate the possibility of using your knife to engage human threats, do NOT COMPROMISE.

i go fixed, daily, have for a long time. like others, i think it's age related. the more doo doo i see and go through, the more i understand what equipment works best.

i always shake my head when i hear the same worn out rhetoric about "knives are for utility guns are for SD". firearms are a very recent new comer to the world of dirsupting human tissue, edged weapons have been being used for CENTURIES. to act like they are ineffective for performing the task that they HAVE BEEN since the freaking bronze age is nothing short of ignorant. guns have their place, so do knives, so do less lethal, so does de-escalation, so does faking compliance, etc.

and, believe it or not, people with ABSOLUTELY NO TRAINING actually figure out how to kill people with knives, everyday. amazing isn't it?!?!

Correct me if I'm wrong but SOG has an excellent reputation
for Fixed Blade Knives. I handled a Pentagon once, very nice.
I wanted a Mark series since I was a kid. I think cause I saw
it in Under Seige II with Steven Segal when he got in this crazy
knife fight on the train with a terrorist. It was awesome.

OK, not a good reason to buy a knife though, but come on I was
13 or something at the time.

Some might claim that ignoring the superior SD effectiveness of a gun is equally, as you say, "ignorant".

Others might claim that, by your reasoning, the even-older technology of avoiding the conflict by running away would be the most effective method.

As for what that knife is...maybe Pillowtalk will chime in...its one of his.

They are effective.

Just not realistic in modern society. Cavemen are gone and the future is near.

Are you really going to stab a crackhead that wants your wallet? Even if he has a knife.

If you have a life with a home and a family and you walk around thinking that you are going to dispatch a threat with ANY weapon it's irresponsible.

Carrying a gun with your family to protect your kids is viable.

Once you pull any weapon be ready for a trial.

It isn't about the weapon, it's about morality and intent.

With law makers trying to take all weapons I can't believe adults walk around talking about stabbing people.

Showing a picture of your physique and telling how it intimidates is childish.

This is the stuff that gives ammo to lawmakers and burns out the ones who know how to play the game.

Cut the crap.

I'll go fixed blade.:D

Even if you dont, you have to live with what you did. It would be hard enough to get over killing someone in a situation where I would have died if I handnt, but I cant imagine the guilt of killing someone when its not justifiable or even worse, hitting an innocent bystander by accident.

Anyway, as for the argument over whether knives are effective, they are. It doesnt take long to bleed out and thats a minor knife injury compared to a nicked artery or bowel or hitting an organ if you have a larger knife. But fixed blade knives are much stronger and generally longer. A folding knife is absolutely the last option you should look at to fill that role.

the answer to this is what your using the knife for if your using it for hard use than you want a fixed blade because there is no pivot to wear out if your in a office environment than you probably don't want a fixed blade because you probably wont need it
(IS THAT A FIXED BLADE OF ARE YOU HAPPY TO SEE ME)
