Fixed blade or Folder ??

They are effective.

Just not realistic in modern society. Cavemen are gone and the future is near.

Are you really going to stab a crackhead that wants your wallet? Even if he has a knife.

If you have a life with a home and a family and you walk around thinking that you are going to dispatch a threat with ANY weapon it's irresponsible.

Carrying a gun with your family to protect your kids is viable.

Once you pull any weapon be ready for a trial.

It isn't about the weapon, it's about morality and intent.

With law makers trying to take all weapons I can't believe adults walk around talking about stabbing people.

Showing a picture of your physique and telling how it intimidates is childish.

This is the stuff that gives ammo to lawmakers and burns out the ones who know how to play the game.

Cut the crap.

I'll go fixed blade.:D

i agree with most of what you've said. i am not one of those who walks around thinking i can neutralize any threat with any weapon. and i would not brag about being intimidating (not sure who that was directed at), but to answer your question - YES, i would very likely use an edged weapon against a knife weilding crack head. i will almost always opt for some type of contact weapon (over a firearm) if the situation affords me that opportunity. i simply do not like discharging firearms in public places. anybody who's had to do so knows how un-nerving it can be. there are misses, there's over penetration, there's alot of bad things that can go wrong. i prefer weapons that completely stay within my control.

Depends on what with you carry every day. Your assailant will not wait while you go retrieve your fixed blade from your mama'a basement.

The man who can avoid a fight will never lose one.

I'm pretty sure the "intimidating physique" comment was directed at PillowTalk, zero.

He made a point of linking to pictures of his physique earlier in the thread.

In most cases, folders are better for carry and fixed blades are better for use. If I were in a situation where I would be stabbing, I would use a fixed blade with a hand guard or handle design that would make it unlikely for my hand to slide up onto the blade.

That being said, I'm one of those guys that carry a knife to cut fruit and boxes, nothing more. I have martial arts and military experience but if push came to shove I would run like a scalded dog if I thought my life was in danger. Pulling out my pocket knife to defend myself is something I would not likely consider particularly since I mainly carry small slipjoints.

Very elegantly put! I like it!

Welcome, by the way!

I have trained in several martial arts styles and find it preferable to disarm an opponent than to engage in battle with his weapon of choice. The second or two that it takes to retrieve your knife may put you in a serious world of hurt.

It is always best to prepare yourself for an encounter that never comes than to be unprepared when that moment comes.

This is as ninja as it gets. Don't you think the crackhead screaming and bleeding is "un-nerving". This is like the line out of a book.

I discharge guns in public all the time and nobody cares.

There has never, EVER been a "Knives as Self-Defense" thread that wasn't improved by a picture of the Dark Ops Interceptor.

Thank you Dark Ops!

uh... no i don't. that's never really bothered me. now, granny catching a stray... that bothers me :(

i don't think you really undertood what i was saying. when i discharge a firearm in residential areas, i'm always disturbed by the possibilities. i didn't mean it might offend someone. i know the old "be aware of your target and what's behind it" i also know how quickly one can tunnel on a target.

you wanna say i'm a "ninja" because i choose to use different tactics than you, that's fine. i don't provide any services for you, so your evaluation does not matter to me. everyone i have provided services for has been quite satisfied with my performance. and no, in case you're wondering, i've never worked at a mall. i have worked for several L.E. agencies, including multi county task forces and have contracted with international security companies.

if your way works for you good :)

I know exactly what you meant.

So you are an operator that suggests that the everyday Joe should use a silent none projectile weapon to kill their adversary in the streets.

they say the memory weakens with age, but i really don't remember saying anything to that effect.

what i DO remember saying is: (1)the knife IS an effective tool for use against human threats, contrary to what alot of people think (2) that i PERSONALLY will opt for a CONTACT WEAPON if the situation affords me that opportunity (3) people are killed everyday by knives weilded by people who do not have any training.

ETA - i think i've more than clearly explained my position on this. i'm finished :-)

How does this apply to self defense?

If you job is killing then that has a different set of rules.

Headline: Special Agent stabs crack head in struggle for wallet.

If you are what you say then I think you statement even sounds worse and immature.

I'd hire someone with some class.

Without getting into all the side arguments and just trying to address the OP's original question I am for fixed blades.

In fact for virtually any use I prefer a fixed blade knife. IMO there is really only one advantage to a folding knife and that is ease of carry / concealability.

I personally do not mind carrying a 6-7 inch fixed blade. A Terzuola Battleguard, Randall No.1 or a Camerer Slim Pickens are my favorites.
