Spyderco AEB-L Mule ---
I lowered the edge angle to 8 degrees per side and finished the apex with a 15 degrees per side micro-bevel. Lots of work here in cleaning up the factory edge grind and taking the edge all the way back to the plunge line. This is a common complaint on Spyderco's that the edge stops a small fraction of an inch before the plunge line. Here I've eliminated that unsharpened blade section and taken it straight back to the plunge. Not really adding anything functionally but maybe a few extra millimeters of edge but makes sharpening easier in my experience along with just looking cleaner overall.
Regarding the choice of edge angles, this is where you need the edge to be if you want cutting ability to be quite high on a knife. The apex bevel stabilizes the apex while allowing a keen edge that is very quick to touch up by simply grinding on the micro-bevel = less grinding. Side benefit, edge retention increases dramatically with even a couple of degrees per side of the edge angle being lowered. This is counter-intuitive but basically as the edge angle drops the steel thickens up behind the apex much more slowly. Therefore you get much more use of the knife before you get into thick enough steel for the edge to be called 'dull'.
Side note --- this knife is also up for sale in the Fixed Blade section of the exchange if you'd like to see for yourself how all this plays out in real world use ....
