Fixed blades

We're approaching 3 years of fixed blades, idk where the time goes. This thread and all the guys posting in it is the primary reason I stay logged in to bladeforums. Its cost me some money, as there's terrible influences in this room but by golly I like the lot of ya, I don't care what those other guys say!

Brother, you and I have a basic and fundamental disagreement about "steel" and "toughness".

Despite that, we can still come-together in this thread and agree to disagree....and that's what I LOVE about this place.

I own a sh!tload of "popular" knives, with all their "super-duper" steels...

...and with that, I still prefer my hard-use carbon blades...

Is that a point of contention between us? No, absolutely not!

I respect your opinion(s), and you respect mine.

...and that's what I LOVE about this thread. ❤️

Your mileage may vary.

All good 👍 I'm a fan of lower alloy steels as well. Steels have been a hobby of mine for some time, beyond my interest in steels when used in knives I machined everything from inconel and titanium to 12560 and 46100 armor for tanks and strikers to nylatron (not a steel) and everything in between. I left a big chunk of 12560 armor with Nathan, that he may at some point make something of, 12560 is the armor on the hull of mraps, tanks, strykers. I didn't start this yesterday and my opinion very closely reflects exactly that of many very respected makers on this forum as well as the data sheets from the manufacturers of the steels themselves.

Impact resistance is something that is measurable, it's not subjective. It isn't an opinion that certain steels are more brittle than others. So I guess I'm confused on what the disagreement is actually over.

I'm a steel nut, people who assert inaccurate information on this forum get exposed pretty quickly. If some dude wanders in and asserts mild steel is the most corrosion resistant steel in existence, he'd be educated within moments.

I learned on this very forum what the difference between strength and toughness is and their effects on performance, it's a fascinating thing.

Anyway, disagreeing is part of life, I'd still have a bourbon with you any day. I said my piece on it, and won't clutter up the thread anymore with it, but if you'd like to continue the conversation in PMs hit me up! I love chatting about steels!

There’s no question lots of hard use knives have been made out of 1095. It’s just not all that high toughness (on paper).

I’ve personally beaten the everloving shit out of some 1095 and it’s held up well, but did deform here and there. Mainly lots of edge wrinkles and ripples, couple chunks knocked out but all in one piece.

Tops does just about the best heat treat on it IMO.

I humbly agree... ❤️

Yep, 56 to 58 rockwell takes a beating. Gotta love the many options in this day and age, despite all the advances in metallurgy and heat treating, the steels of yester year still work. I like the edge durability to be strong enough to split a nail with virtually no damage. Even if I don't need to do so myself, it is nice to try for yourself. Of course that's knife abuse lol not all steels survive it equally.

Progress Pics: Putting this one together this week..
First time using this Micarta from Shadetree.
I like it. It's coarse, but grippy. Plus I like the looks of the weave. Capped it with black linen Micarta in the rear. Will add tubing After handle shaping. Right now it's just profiled. Hope You will like it.
