FK3 show and tell

OK, measurements as promised. I only cut myself once taking these pics, dammit (yes, really, the web of my left thumb too ).

I measured at the screws for consistency. That also happens to be the thickest part (center) and thinnest part (rear). Front is a bit different, it tapers from spine to edge, so those measurements are at the thickest spot, closer to the spine. I measure blade stock thickness of both of these at 0.1885” +/- 0.0005”, at the ricasso just ahead of the scales.

In summary:

FK2FK3Difference (FK2 - FK3)
Front: 0.7675”Front: 0.7400”0.0275”
Middle: 0.8595”Middle: 0.7985”0.0610”
Rear: 0.6715”Rear: 0.6940”-0.0225”

And the two knives I used. The FK3 is a tweaker that literally just arrived today!

IMG_4821.jpeg

This shows how the FK2 is both thicker in the center (by 0.061”) and thinner at the rear (0.0225”), for a more pronounced palm swell. I personally like the FK2 scales much better.

HTH!!!

ETA - Totally forgot one of the points I wanted to make.

FK2 palm swell = 0.8595 - 0.6715 = 0.1880”

FK3 palm swell = 0.7985 - 0.6940 = 0.1045”

The FK2 palm swell is therefore ~80% more pronounced vs. the FK3.

🥰😍. Appreciate the measurements! Very interesting to see!

Sorry that you had to sacrifice for the cause! Web cuts suck! Appreciate you efforts! 🙂

THANK YOU!!!
This is far more effort than I expected, especially bleeding your own blood. You didn’t have to do that!!!
I guess I need to feel them in hand to really, well, feel them.
Sooooo, who wanna send me a FK3? Pretty please?

No problem, I’m an engineer, and I’ve been wanting to do these measurements for awhile anyway.

Oh well, the cut was my own dumb fault. FK2 slipped and I couldn’t move in time. The heel of the blade smacked the web, and cut it surprisingly easily. Not terrible, but the damn thing wouldn’t stop bleeding. I’ll live.

Note, I made an edit at the end of my post.

I thought sheep liked thistle? Or is that goats who eat anything…
lol, goats are the gluttons. Amazing what those critters will munch on. Sheep have more delicate mouths (and refined tastes :), and shy away from most pokey things. Aside from young, prickly berries that have fresh leaves. Roses are a no-go.

Thistle are amazing for pollinating insects so I leave them everywhere else, but pull them from the fields. They seed like dandelions or milkweed, and spread incredibly efficiently, so I have an eye for them starting to grow. Funny how you can lock in on even just a shoot coming out of the ground, kinda like looking for 4-leaf clovers, you get into a targeting daze.

Thanks for the comment👍

I do prefer nice FK2 scales over nice BFK scales, and have them on a couple of my BFK. I even filled the lanyard holes on a black set ....

But please don't make me choose between plain Micarta FK2 scales vs. AECM FK3/BFK scales ... AECM would win :)
I'm in the 'FK2-slabs-on-FKs' camp as well. Have multiple set up this way.
Am interested to try out swaps on the FBFK when it drops. Because #science

Thanks for the measurement data SpyderPhreak SpyderPhreak . Nice job!

Subjective Feelings + Objective Data = Validated Idea

I too prefer the feel of the more Rubenesque handle scales from the FK2.

I'm definitely putting a set of FK2 scales on my FBFK when it lands! Probably the double red / double black shown here, but possibly some ghost blue G10. The other set will very likely go on this tweaker FK3.

I completely understand. Yes goats are gluttons for sure. I live in a pretty dry climate. And well there is no grass for about 9 months of the year. My neighbor has about 160 goats and I see them always roaming the hills around out house. I am amazed as to how they keep able and produce milk. I buy about two rounds of the cheese weekly. It’s great. I am a big believer of eating as local as you can, I truly feel it really benefits one’s health
I think you have a great looking farm and land.

My first ever reformulated D3V CPK. Deliberately chose a color combo which I will immediately recognize despite the forward D3V logo placement. Was looking for one of my river-bed rocks with some red in to use as foreground :)

That is a very nice photo Mat. The rough surfaces on the rock really contrast well with the smooth finish on the blade and the texturing of the handle scales. Great lighting and focus makes the knife look amazing. Bravo! 👋

Thank you Phil, you are always very kind my friend :)

I recently upgraded my iPhone from a 6+ year old X Pro Max to an iPhone 16 Pro Max (with 3 lenses). Although I am no wiz kid with this new gadget which seems to have more camera options, I could tell right off the bat that it definitely takes cleaner and crisper photos 👍

You made her pose for you .... great photo of a great knife! I guess we can call it the "Great Idea".

Here is my great idea: everything from here on out which I score in reformulated D3V (not pre-order) will be in handles and fasteners that make it stand out immediately compared to my pre R-D3V. I've never ordered in the blue and the other bright colors before so going to mix things up for fun :)
