So, those of you that participate in the Knife Exchange here and elsewhere, what do you do when a person flakes out on a deal? I know that things happen, emergencies come up and the like. What about when a deal is in the works, you ship your item out in good faith, youfollowed all the rules, packaged securely and properly, only to have the other party try to change canoes in midstream? I'm interested in your experiences with this and your reactions. Go.

I have a short list of folks that either back out on deals(for no legitimate reason) or just dissappear after the initial agreement that I will no longer deal with. If you make an agreement, you should follow through, but I do agree that if there is nothing sent, there is no deal. Now with trying to change the deal after agreements are made, that is just low down.

On another note, how hard is it for people to send an email back saying that they are no longer interested or they found something better? I always reply back to folks, unless you are one of the folks on the list.

I can't disagree with a single thing you pointed out KSK. People should not commit to buying something unless they have the cash ready to go, and can accept delivery. Trading is in the same circle, if you have questions ask them before you commit. It saves time, energy and shipping costs.

My opinion as a member not a moderator is that if someone tries to change terms on me after the initial deal is agreed to, then I'm going to walk. If I want to play games, I already own a PS3; I'm not looking to clown around for a transaction.

I've had some really good transactions here and ma of the people in my feedback list I'd gladly deal with again. But there are a few that were somewhat "iffy". I've been meaning to put together a list of people that I consider solid BF citizens that I'd gladly take them at their word.

When someone says "Ok its a deal" via email/msg/whatever, I consider it a done deal. I'm heading to the post office pretty soon after, and if I came home to someone trying to back out or change the terms I'd definitely feel scammed in a way. "Its a deal" is your commitment, and if you waffle on that you've wasted peoples time and possibly money. Prior to that point I don't get too riled up, flakes are part of the territory

I recently had to back out of a done deal.
My little guy is too young to participate on the forum and I was making a trade on his behalf.

I work nights and struck the deal at work without realizing Gus was no longer interested in trading away his knife.

Fortunately nothing was shipped, but I was very embarrassed to have backed out of a deal even though the other party was understanding.

If someone were to back out after an item shipped, as long as they reimburse my shipping costs and I am out nothing but time, then all is well and I would do business again.
Now if it happened a second time, the hate thread in feedback would be epic!

Well, don't let one person ruin your entire experience. I can tell you with certainty for every flaker here there are dozens of solid members that will follow through properly. Sorry to hear of your luck, if we can help, let us know.

I had someone refuse a delivery on a knife because they didn't want to pay the customs on the knife. I was told to resend it at a low value or refund the cost.

Kind of a raw deal. Either break the law or be hosed for the initial shipping costs.

In general, most people seem really awesome. Some other people, not as great to work with.

I am a new member here but every year I use the internet to make hundreds of transactions for business and personal with great success (including 100 percent feedback on over 300 transactions on eBay). I have made a half-dozen transactions on here over the past few weeks and I am uniformly impressed with the integrity and above all communication that I see with bladeforum members. One seller eMailed a picture of the package/tracking number and this has inspired me to up my game and communicate even more, particularly as a seller. Who could object to an extra eMail from a seller with some piece of info?

I might add that flakiness is still better than out and out thievery, which is always at risk when there is no third-party involvement (like eBay or PayPal). It is well to remember that, if you choose to use the PayPal gift option, all bets are off if the recipient decides to just keep your money and send nothing!

Totally right. I have somewhere between 100 and 200 transactions on eBay. I also have a few here (though not much feedback... Seems people leave feedback like 20% of the time a best), and it's almost universally positive, with a few exceptions.

Never had it happen to me yet, and haven't done it myself. But I've made trades before on knives where the other party has had very low quality pics up; and while they were good guys/gals who did their best to explain the condition of the knife, if it came to me below my expectations I could see myself sending a knife back and refunding their shipping costs just because I don't see much fault in anyone there.

With that said, "buyers remorse" is not an acceptable reason to not complete a deal.

If the buyer was advised in advance that he might have to pay customs fees, sorry....end of discussion. If he was advised, and now he's decided he doesn't want to pay customs....and you have his money in your bank account...end of discussion. <g>

It may be the end of discussion, unless they paid you with PayPal. In the eyes of PayPal refused delivery is the same as no delivery, and you would owe him 100% of his money back. Which PayPal will remove from your account or lock your account until you pay up.
Meanwhile you will be out round trip international shipping costs.

Flakers are just that..Flakes . It always seems that when you call them on that fact they typically concoct a fabricated story of some great tragedy and that's why they didn't go through with the sale or trade or a custom knife that you may have gone out of your way to build .

Then they will try to turn the tables and blame you for being insensitive to their crisis and that's why they don't follow through with their commitments.

Now I am not trying to mock people who may of had a personal tragedy happen to them not at all. But sorry I think most of these stories are fabricated.

Can you tell it happened to me a few weeks ago. Jokers

Flaky experience with newbies mostly - recently joined with around 10 or less posts. Mostly they have discovered the wonderful world and want to purchase everything on the exchange leading to over commitment and then nothing. Not a peep.

I am okay with change of heart before any damage in terms of physical possession is done. Time wastes, but that is considered investment in being more smarter. :-)

Which is why I think it's foolish to ship internationally. This also is why I keep a zero balance in my Paypal account and keep no more than 5 bucks in the dedicated Paypal bank account. I try not to do things which could put me over a barrel. I managed to do quite nicely without Paypal or ebay for 50 years, so if they cancelled my accounts today I'm pretty sure I'd likely survive. In fact, I'm quite sure it would save me money. ;-)

It does make me not want to ship overseas. I've done it a lot of times, but one dishonest buyer can ruin the whole thing.

If I already shipped? I'd try to be understanding, but I'd hope they'd offer to reimburse shipping costs.

I had one person ask to trade back. I didn't get the description right so apologized profusely and reimbursed his shipping. I now go out of my way to get every detail on the table. I'm extremely concerned that the other party is happy. I hope they feel the same, but everyone is different.

I've also taken a loss because I won't trade back simply because of traders remorse. As we say, this isn't a store. Be sure that you want to sell/trade/buy guys. Either that or stay off the exchange.

I owe beers to a few members here....

I've been guilty of flaking in the first degree. I've asked a member or two to hold a knife for me. They closed the sale threads they had going. Only for me to have to back out later on.

Boy it's embarrassing.

These members were so kind, understanding, and gracious. Having sold many a knife here I know it was a pain in the a$$ and these fellas took it in stride.

I wouldn't ask for a hold again unless I definitely had a plan for the bucks. My impulse control issues are a lot better these days too and I always attempt going out of my way to be a good salesman and member here.

Some of the best people on earth hang out here:thumbup:
