Folder around $600

i have a nice Korth Stinger... Rick Lala's IKBS in this is AMAZING! Look at Korth knives as well as Brad Southard.

add to that Randy Doucette.

Personally, I'm partial to Doucette, Begg, and Lambert.

OFC, IMO, the cream of the crop is Brian Tighe, but he doesn't make framelocks to my knowledge. He makes button locks. I love the Tighe Coon.

Not to get off-topic, I was under the impression that only Masters of Defense (MOD), Microtech and Meyerco make button lock (plunge lock) production folders. So there are custom knifemakers using the button lock? That is good.

Questions for Harkamus: how does the fluted blade on the Tighe Coon fare in cutting when compared to an ordinary smooth blade? The only production folder I seen with a fluted blade is the Kershaw 1730.

How well can a titanium button lock withstand wear and tear ? I have a button lock MOD CQD Mark 2 which is probably stainless and it still locks up fine after 3 1/2 years of EDC.

XM-18, RJ Martin, Todd Begg, Kirby Lambert, Tom Mayo. I agree about the Galyean Pro Series; I LOVE my small Lahar.

David Mosier of DM Knives. Great custom maker.

+1 Carrying one of his flippers right now, was $500 if I remember right. Very nice, prefer it over my XM-18 by far.
Can't argue with a Todd Begg Glimpse either.

I must admit that I am getting a little bored of all these xm18 posts. Mainly because I want one haha

Thalestin, it's without a doubt, the smoothest, toughest, folder I've ever seen, held, or used! It opens smoother than my Sebenza. It feels like the blade is on ball bearings it opens so smoothly! I highly recommend getting one!

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I'm going to resurrect this old thread because I'm in the same position the OP was back in April, 2010. I'm interested to see if you guys have made any revisions, additions or deletions to the suggestions you made to him back then.

My requirements are similar to the OP's with the following changes:

1. Titanium frame
2. Stainless blade (S35VN, BG42, RWL 34, Elmax, M390, CTS-XHP, etc.)
3. Framelock or liner-lock
4. Flipper preferred, but not mandatory
5. Non-AO
6. Thrust bearing system (IKBS, STBS, etc.) or equivalent
7. Blade length between 3.0" and 3.5"
8. Overall length between 7.0" and 8.0"
9. Weight not to exceed 4.0 oz (no wiggle room on this one)
10. Pocket clip removal doesn't void the warranty
11. No special tools required for disassembly unless included with the knife
12. Build time not to exceed 12 months

I'm also looking for something with a little style. My current EDC is a William Henry B7-FT and the small custom Tighe Breaker is at the top of my list of candidates at the moment. I'd also seriously consider a LionSteel TiSpine, but it doesn't meet a couple of criteria on my list (10, 11).

Lemme know what you think. Thanks :)

You need a Sebenza.

Full custom.

In that price range, you can and should get exactly what you want. Do not settle for anything less.

Strider, XM-18 or CR, take your pick.

Ankerson nailed it. He usually does.

cost: $400-$600 new. $300-$400 used on Exchange. Strider if you like the tactical look, probably the Sng as that's the common size for most folks. The SMF is you're a big lug or a soldier/marine. The SJ75 or harder-to-find PT if an office guy.

These come in flippers if you want. The others don't. cost: $600-$750 used unless you're a first responder. XM-18 if you want over-built, truck-like, HEAVY in the pocket, but will last you and your kids forever. Comes in slicer grind or spanto grind; either 3" or 3.5" blade-length. Spanto is a bastard design which is a tanto with a spear-point (heavy duty). I sold both of my Hinderers within two wks of buying them. No use for them.

cost: $350-$450 for the basic models NIB. Chris Reeve Sebenza(either large or small blade-length) for the dream EDC for the common man, and get the Umnumzaan if your dreams come with a tactical hint. Slightly thicker blade than the common Sebenzas too; 0.140" instead of 0.125". Just FYI, the new Sebenza 25's (new model) come with 0.140" thick bladestock also.

I've had multiples of all three manufacturers...all good knives. I still have CRK's and Striders. Don't plan to sell 'em.

Glocks are just fine; about $500 new. They go bang EVERY time. My all-time favorite and what I carry.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I already own a large Sebenza. The Mnandi, small Sebenza, and Strider PT are too small. The Umnum and the SNG are too heavy. The SJ75 doesn't appeal to me. An XM-18 3" flipper would work, but $600 is the most I'd be willing to pay for it and I doubt I could find a new one for that price. Full custom is a possibility. I've seen a couple of knives from Chuck Gedraitis recently that caught my eye and meet my criteria. Here's one of them:

Any more suggestions?

Go watch the custom makers for sale area. $600 will buy most of the knives that get posted, and they're all quite unique and quite beautiful. Heck, you could find a maker there doing stuff you like who would make a one-off to your specifications.

They sure are, Grease. Problem is, I can't watch the customs area often enough to snag knives I like before they get snapped up. Chuck's knives are no exception.
