Folders or Fixed.

What if you carry a sidearm?
How many knives does that equal? 😁

My edc has been a small fixed for years, occasionally esee 3, but for the last 7 years or so a Bk14 Eskabar. My old man wasn't a fan of folders, he used to say "folders are just a broken knife". I don't exactly believe the same thing, but the habit was already formed.

Whatever suits you better.

I have no use for a fixed blade.
I've carried one and have found no use for it.
It was also uncomfortable to carry a fixed.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. If your carry method is uncomfortable then change your carry method, or add some blade cant to the sheath.

I agree with the OP statement. I prefer a folder for EDC and fixed only for camping/hiking.

We can open carry fixed blades here in MI but I've had police called on me in the past. Rather than be detained and questioned, I'll leave my fixed at home (unless camping) and just carry a folder everyday.

I’ve carried a knife since I was a ten year old boy. I’ve always had the philosophy that an EDC knife should primarily be a folder and for outdoor activities ( hunting, camping, fishing ) a fixed blade is better. Any body have any thoughts on this?
I think your logic is spot on. I only have one fixed blade which belonged to my wife’s grandfather but I’ll for sure get some more.

I carry at least three folders on me. Two are slippies that have sentimental value to me. The other is my primary locking folder. Then, I always have a fixed blade horizontal up front. It usually is a small blade (3 inches or less), though sometimes it’s a BRK gunny. I’ve grappled (Brazilian Jiu jitsu) for nearly a decade. I have a similar knife philosophy to the owner of Shiv Works. My gun is at 3 position, knife at noon. Use the hips to free and draw the knife, use the knife to create separation for either a disengage or a gun draw. I only need my knife in the clinch. If I’m not in the clinch, then the gun is primary. Gun is primary in the clinch too, but it’s hard to draw in that situation.

You carry 4 knives and a pistol at all times?

It really largely depends on factors like personal preference, laws, comfort, usage, etc. Folders are great for EDC since they’re portable, light, and discreet. If someone needs a box opened, a relatively tame-looking Para 3 can get the job done with no fuss. A larger fixed blade can certainly serve you as well, but a small folder is an acceptable bare minimum for opening stuff conveniently. A small fixed blade like an ESEE Izula fills a similar niche to the compact folder.

If size and discretion (and laws, very importantly) are non-factors, I myself tend to prefer larger fixed blades (5” to 7” of blade). No serious logical reason really, just a preference. Fixed blades are also generally more appropriate for food prep applications since they’re easier to clean and you don’t have internal parts to worry about.

My usual “socially acceptable” carry is one folder plus a small fixed blade. Just carry what you prefer and always check your local knife laws. Have fun. :)

I understand your preference.

I just don't see the need for one to try and make it work. A folder has been more than enough.
If it suits your needs and it feels comfortable go with it.

Not when I’m sleeping. I actually carry quite a bit more. I have my phone, a silver dollar from my grandfather, a PM2 in my LFP toward the front of my pocket. Same pocket holds a Modlite PLHv2 in 18650. LBP has a pocket notebook and pen. RBP is my wallet. RFP is a back up light (Surefire EDC1LT), primary pocket knife (Emerson Commander today), money clip, buck 301 in a slip, Northwoods Presidential in a slip, watch pocket is my keys. Hip is a Sig P320 X-Compact IWB. Front is a small fixed blade (Spartan Blades Enyo today) riding horizontal. If my shirt has a pocket, then I usually have a random knife in there too, just for chucks and yucks.
