After a new knife purchase, do you immediately sharpen it yourself?

needs "other" choice.......
Interestingly, I and others were able to figure out the intent of the pollster. Does it need to be perfect before anyone participates?

“Other” is only useful if there is a fill in the blank option, which there isn’t.

Some folks aren't happy unless you chew their food for them, and spit it down their throats...

And some are not happy unless they ruin cornflakes for everyone else. The world takes all kinds.

You're option #1
Nope, sorry. You'll notice how I didn't vote and explained why by describing what I actually do. Flawed poll. Not your fault specifically, unless you keep making these polls and not learning from previous flaws. It is really hard to get quantitative data out of such a qualitative facet of the hobby. Then again, simply adding an other option, or something along the lines of "only if needed", would go along way to getting a more representative sample. As is, you are missing a lot of data form people who don't fit into the limited available options.

You have yet to explain how “other” is a useful option. Without a “fill in the blank” option, “other” just tells you there are x amount of people out there that didn’t have their preferred choice available. That isn’t helpful in any form of “quantitative” fashion… without the “qualitative” data the filled in blank provides.. which isn’t available with this forum’s software.

I'm voting "other" on this poll.....now op has the data for me to get better and more accurate results.....

It's very simple, the poll should have a 4th option called; Yes, if I'm not happy with the factory edge

I sharpen most of my new knives, exeptions has been Spyderco wich mostly has come very sharp.

So IMO none of the options is representative of what I do with my new knives, closest would be YES, but that's not accurate either.

So no vote for me.

This poll is not much help for anything.

My personal preference is ;
if a knife is sharp and cuts stuff then I don’t sharpen it.

If it’s dull and won’t cut then I sharpen it.

I know that’s kinda simple but it works well for me.

Some people just like to fuss and find fault. ;)

To me the intent of the poll , in context , is pretty obvious ...unless you simply enjoy being difficult .

Yes I guess I pride myself on being able to figure out intent, it wasn’t all that hard. I don’t trip over meaningless things in pursuit of perfection.

You sure do like to frame different perspectives than your own as faulty though. E.g. here with the thinly veiled implication that those who would have voted "other", "sometimes" or "not necessarily" if the option were available lack the intellect to "figure out intent".

So you’re telling me you couldn’t figure out the intent of the poll without making it a point to try and correct the OP, and refuse to participate?

Yeah sorry, I’m a little brighter than that.

I voted "No". I don't automatically sharpen the knife unless the knife is dull. The majority of the time, the edge is good enough to use.

I'll break it down: I consider the intent of a poll to gather information. I did not "correct" anyone, I stated an option that most accurately reflected the information I wished to provide, which was a form of participation.

And where you assumed the intent was to insult you, it was not. It was to point out that you turn towards insulting others as soon as they disagree with your perspective.
