its still in progress but i figured i should post some pics of it as it is. im still waiting on my shipment from Darren Ellis to finish it up. i still need to mount my blower to the flange and fix the cord on it. i just hooked up the wires to make sure i had the right wires going to the right plug.

the forge is made up of a 35lb propane tank with the top cut off and laying on its side. the legs are of 3/4 steel round bar that i salvaged from my grandpas shop. i welded a 2" black pipe to the side of the forge and drilled a 3/8" hole and welded the nut to it. the burner is the indian george design. i painted them so that it would help prevent rust. if you have any questions or comments feel free to post them.

looks good to me, does it have a hole cut in the back to pass through long pieces. Cant tell from the picture. Ive found it usefull, not sure everyone would though.

nope no pass thru. ill have about 16"-17" once i line it and everything. i forgot to thank the people who helped me with my forge.
Kevin Davey - thanks for welding the legs onto my forge for me.
Luke (swede2207) - thanks for welding the burner together and cutting the whole in the tank and welding the pipe to it as well as drilling the hole for the set screw and welding the nut to it.
Indian George - thanks for your burner design and helping me understand more about how it works and everything.
Darren Ellis - thanks for having the supplies i need to finish up my forge and having them at excellent prices. cant wait for your order to get here so i can finish this baby up.

did i miss anyone?

Jacob!!! You should think about put in a switch on the blower. It makes it allot easier to light the forge.

thats a later project. i just checked thru fedex tracking and it said my package should be here today. if it doesnt get here today it will be here tomorrow. i already informed the gate guard to either have them deliver it or just take the package and deliver it to my house. i trust her. her husband is a marine. i might be able to sell him one of my knives once i get good.

as you can see in the second pic i have my fire bricks all ready to go. im just anxious to get my package.

Dang you sure got after it son! I have been THINKING about it:rolleyes:

i cant wait to start making knives. once i finish my forge and setup my shop table im going to post pics of it all. just keep checking back here for updates. can i stick my first knife into your head Kerry? might make you a little smarter if i did. :D

Jacob,

What is the diameter of the forge? 12" or more? The forges IG builds are made from 8" pipe. There is nothing wrong with a large diameter, just that you need to create more BTU's in a larger firebox to be able to get up to welding temp. I know that you will not be welding at first, there should be no problem with forging, but when you eventually get the urge to forge weld, you have to have enough heat.

The firebox on the style that IG makes is the length of the forge, usually 16" or so, but the 8" tube is lined with 1" of kaowool with a firebrick floor, so the firebox is not all that big.

Here is a link to Ron Reil's site, he has much information on forge building, especially BTU's vs volume of the firebox. http://ronreil.abana.org/SiteMap.html
You should be able to get lots of info for your forge project.

thanks BBBBBB Beaver. the diameter is 12" but once i line it it will be about 10" or less. the way i figure it, since i only have the one opening i should be able to save that way. im going to have to play around with it and have someone here helping me so that i can bring it up to the right temp. is it possible to roast a chicken in mine since it is so big? HEHEHEHE

Great job Jacob on the start of getting it together. You will be making knives in no time. Good luck and if you need some help just email. Or call me. God bless and have a great day.

When I leave this world I would like to be known by the one who made his knives from start to finish. And I sell what I make and I make what I sell.

Jacob,

I hate to break the bad news to you, but your package isn't going to be delivered today, nor likely tomorrow. Remember, I emailed you the tracking number over the weekend and it was going to be dropped off yesterday... You should probably have it by the weekend...the tracking info should update tonight and give you the correct estimate for delivery...

:)

well shoot. i was hoping to be able to fire it up sometime soon. darren did you remember to include my free $100 gift certificate to your place?  :D:D:D HEHEHEHEHEHEHE

ok tracker has been updated and it says that it will get here on the 8th. i just have to remember to tell the gate guard to either hold it and deliver it or tell them howto get to my house since the neighborhood is fairly new. i also found out today that quiet time is from 10PM-8AM. plenty of time to work on a knife. i am so excited about getting the package. i wonder how many neighbors i will piss off by pounding on the anvil at times. i hope i do piss off my neighbor that doesnt talk to me anymore and wont even say hi. it would be fun to do that. HEHEHEHEHE.

come on. it doesnt seem like it hurts you when you get stabbed in the head. i would be nice too and not make a pig sticker or one of my bigger tactical knives. i would only make a small knife. HEHEHEHEHEHE

all serious knifemakers agree that kerry's head makes a superior quenchant :D

Dooood...something looks familiar about your ID but I can't put my finger on it. In fact, I REFUSE to put my finger on it. :D :o

Someones been busy..:)

Those pipes makes the forge look side heavy...you may want to construct some sort of independant support for the pipes and blower rather than just rely on the joint where it joins the forge body.....as well as considering beefing up the legs by welding a skid on or something similar to add a bit more strength and better balance as we discussed when we met.

Best of luck, and looking forward to seeing you first knife.

:)

"is it possible to roast a chicken in mine since it is so big?" -Pimpin

Roast? No, incinerate? Yes!

Things are looking good! With a forge body that large I would suggest a second layer of 1" wool, not for the insulation but just to reduce the inside volume of the forge chamber some. I think you will discover that an opening out the backside of the forge may turn out to be a must but you should have no problem whatsoever reaching welding temps in any case either way.

What are the bricks for? Closing off the front with an adjustable opening?
