Forge Pics

the bricks are for closing off the front with an adjustable opening. if i feel as tho i need more wool later on ill redo it. i have enough coming in my shipment for one layer. and since my forge is so big i decided not to cut the hole in the back to save on energy. later on i might add a skid to the bottom if it is too heavy or just a support to the burner.

If you add layers of insulation till it's say 8", will all that insulation allow it to get hotter than a 8" pipe, or just be a waste of insulation?

Seems like the insulation factor would increase (but I may be wrong on that) it would pretty much be a waste, it would be just to reduce the volume of the chamber. One inch of wool of the proper density is all you really need to get the temps even for making damascus. Volume of chamber and btu output of the burner along with a certain minimum of insulation of the proper density are the key players.

heres some more pics of my progress. im taking a break to grab a small bite and then im going to do the lnswool and itc-100 and clay kitty litter and satanite and then fire it up. i already tested my burner with the blower mounted and its so sweet. while it was going i yelled out "YEE HAW!!!!" i know thats so redneck of me. :D:D:D well here are the pics. i hope yall think my choice of beverage is better than IG's choice (budweiser).

last night was when i assembled the propane setup. today i mounted the blower to the flange with self taping screws and screwed the flange onto the burner assembly. i also trimmed the pipe inside the forge so that it doesnt stick out past the lnswool.

Bubba!!! Stop messing around here and get that sucker done and fired up.:jerkit: :jerkit: :D Looking Good:thumbup:

IG your just mad cause of my choice of beverage. thats a real mans beer. and its a full pint of beer too. i dont fool around when it comes to my beer of choice.

The type of beer you drink does not make a Knifemaker. :jerkit: Get to work.:grumpy:

Make sure the ITC-100 goes on top of the satanite if you are using both and not the other way around!

Its sweet looking JM.

Whats your anvil look like?

Ahhh, Guinness... the beer you can chew. Have fun with that

You should have a friend videotape your first forgings, I want to see it if ya blow yourself up!

All too true... look at IG... he drinks bud !

Myself, i'm not much of a drinker. I only drink every once in a blue moon, and then it's usualy something like taquilla or jegermeister, not beer.

i forgot to get a paint brush while i was in town earlier filling up my tank and getting some self taping screws to mount the blower. im back now and are about to finish up the forge. im going to wait til night fall to turn on the burner so i can adjust it properly. i dont have a video camera except for the 30 second one on my phone. my friend has a camera that takes video. ill see if he can come out this weekend to video tape me making a pair of tongs. ill post a 30 second vid of my forge fired up later tonight once its finished.

oki got it all done and fired it up and heated a piece of 1/4" rebar. i left it in there for about 10-15 mins and then i shut off the forge to let it cool down and was able to just take the rebar and bend it while it was still hot. it bent over so easily. i just pushed against the ground and it bent. once the forge cools down, which should be tomorrow morning, ill take pics of the inside of it. at least i got it up and running just fine, with a little help from indian george on adjusting it. still need to tweak it a bit so i can start annealing some leaf springs and make a few throwing knives. figured that throwing knives for myself would be the perfect way to practice before working on anything else. well here are the pics.

But, Justin a really Knifemaker must drink beer?????:jerkit: So whats that tell you???? HEHEHEHEHEHEHE!!!

if you look in the background you can see my tool shed, family trailer (4x8), and my bikes including my cutson BMX designed for offroading. i cant wait to start annealing and heat treating. but i first need to forge myself a couple pairs of tongs. i wont be able to get the rebar to do that until sunday cause mom told me to wait to come to her place until sunday. ill get the rebar while i clean her backyard.

PS. how do you like the quality of picture my cell phone takes?

"Real" knifemakers drink whatever the hell they want and tell anyone who doesn't like it to kiss their ***. ;)

Congrats, Jacob. Good start.

that forge started out as a clone of that 30lb propane tank im using for my gas. also my forge doesnt have a pass thru hole in the back. seems to work just fine like it is. now if only george, the expert on forges, could come down here, have a few beers with me, and show me how to better adjust my forge that would be great. ;););)HEHEHEHEHE
