Forged In Fire

I liked that when one of Burts competitors was having trouble getting his welds to stick Burt went over and gave advice on how to fix it.
I wonder if any of the other smiths knew they were going up against a Mastersmith. I know if I was there I would have spent more time watching him work than on my own forging. :)

I noticed that too. That is a class act, and those of a master craftsman!

Congratulations, Tobin!

The years go on...

...but the spirit remains unchanged. :D

Tobin's having some issues with his tablet being able to post on the forum, but gave me permission to post these pics of him. :D

I was disappointed that the smiths were expected to re-make a knife from a flawed blade. A couple of good makers lost through no fault of their own.

Congrats Tobin!

As we have seen previously, a technique error is why the blade failed to perform. Doug did not hit the rope square and the blade twisted in his hand immediately.

That Cutlass was BADASS. Probably the first sword I've ever wanted to own.

VERY bad form expecting them to make a good blade from those failed blades. BUT - the cutlass portion.... WOW!!! I'm sure Tobin's cutlass failure to cut rope was because they didn't hit the rope squarely - you could see the blade twist as the rope was hit. It sure did slice that fish!

Tobin did it right with his big heavy blade that's going to chop. Congrats!

What I want to know is how did the cutlass that failed only barely cut the salmon while slicing the rope so easy? The judge say the edge held up good during chop test, but darn thing wouldn't cut at all.... What gives? Surely the blade was sharpened before bringing to test???

Tobin here,

No one was more surprised than me to see kyle go, the guys blades are awesome😊

An I gotta say all the guys on the show were great it truly was a great experience hanging out with them.

Also be sure and check out kyles (gahagan knives) raffle over on facebook. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by saying that, but it is for his nonprofit veterans group. Definitely check it out.

Sad to Kyle go as well, and embarrassed they had my turd on the table, felt bad for the guys using 2nd hand steel. Tobin did great though

Definitely did not look like a good angle on the rope cut with Tobin's cutlass.

I was kind of confused as to why they made people use failed blades. Isn't cutting pieces off of a car enough of a challenge!?

I would like to see them come up with some other king of challenge besides using scrap metal.

The whole show is about entertainment. The tests are not accurate by any measure, with too many human error factors coming into play with their testing methods. They would need to have a machine that can swing the blades for cutting tests to have any kind of accuracy.

That episode was by far the dumbest idea they have had yet. Making those guys use a blade with known issues is absurd. Not knocking any of the previous contestants blades of course, but I would much rather everyone be given a opportunity to build something that is completely their design.
Congrats Tobin! That cutlass was killer, really enjoyed the look of it.
Doug slapped that rope with the side of the blade. Last I checked a sword is typically sharp on its edge;)

Or just use somebody with better blade control. Doug has horrible form for cutting, and despite his FMA background, I feel that he is very lacking in practical cutting experience. Hitting pigs sideways with blades, flopping blades, using them as axes not edges..... Can cut a 1" hemp rope but not a fish- that's operator error!!

Of course the cloth won't be cut if the side of the blade is contacting clothing....

Doug looks like a cool guy to hang out with and grab a beer, but IMO he is horrible on the show, and how the tests are performed seems to disrespect the edged tools produced. This episode and the claymore one show him attacking like a 5 year old would. If Jay was the one doing all of the testing, I'm sure the results would be much better. Love the show, hate when Doug gets on.
