Forum Knife Updates and comments

Personally I'd prefer the number to be limited to about half of what we've ordered and one per. I really don't consider a run of 500 to be "limited".

Still, I'm very happy that we have a forum knife, that Buck has joined the list of makers, and that we had a team step up to make this happen.

I wish we could get Tony Bose, or someone with connections to Case, to allow us to have a Forum version of their 2019 collab for next years knife. That would be pretty special, and with a run of 500 I'd bet it could be brought in for around the same price as some of their other ones. Heck with the Backpocket model selling for $50-$60 now that it's "old" I'd bet we could get close to the $100 mark. And if they didn't want to do a "new" pattern, I'd bet a 500 piece run of Zulu Spear's should be doable for that money. And that would be a very cool Forum knife.
That's a very good idea. I personally think given the rise in the cost of EVERYTHING the $100 limit could be raised. Even just $20 more would make a difference.

500 knives is fine by me. It's "club knife". I really don't care about the number, excepting the number behind the $. Cheaper is better and the quantity should always be enough for those who want one or two to get one or two. The way skblades set this up with pre-orders prior to knives being made was masterful. 100 or 500 knives matters not a bit to me, but $71 is much better than $120. I'll probably end up giving mine away anyway. It will make one heck of a gift.

Good point.

A large percentage of those who ordered this year were folks who do not normally post in Traditional. Some of them were excited by this being a knife made by Buck . A lot of others were excited that the blade steel was CPM154. Remove either of those factors, and the number ordered would drop.

It's not clear to me that a knife in Case True-Sharp would have the same draw to those whose focus is not on traditional patterns, so I think we would fall far short of 500 sold if that was the forum knife. And with their annual collaboration knives in 154CM typically running $450 or so, I don't see us getting one of those for $100.

Forum knife always seems to bring in a bunch of new faces in the ordering threads. I think this is the first year you had to publicly proclaim your intentions. Before, you could just wait until the order link went up and silently buy however many you were allowed to buy per single order, without even being a member here.

That was a worthwhile process, even if it made for a lot of headaches. Easy for me to say, not my headaches. :) It was really nice to see a new (to me) dealer so willing to jump in and make this happen for everyone, and as always the hard work of Frank and Gary managing the process. I hope @skblades gets a lot of goodwill and increased sales as a result of his efforts, especially since he had to donate all of his time to get this done at no profit to himself.

I find it fascinating and totally perplexing that there are so many Buck fans who don't frequent the Traditional subforum. For those of you Buck followers who do show up here, do you have any explanation why?

I'm in the group excited to see a modern steel. My focus is on traditionals but I wouldn't have been in for True-Sharp. Too soft for me. Heck, I wouldn't even have been in for 420HC, even though Buck is the one maker who gets it to perform halfway decently. I want to know when we can have something in CPM-M4. :)

I have been around for the release of a couple other Forum knives here, but this is the first one I have purchased. Mostly because I finally realized that if I didn't get off the bench and start ordering direct, then I probably wasn't going to get one. Secondary market prices do increase rapidly. I got tired of seeing great knives released and not getting to enjoy them.

Really wish I would have gotten one of the Canal Street serpent pen knives when they were abundant. Don't see many of those around at all these days.

I think the BUCK knife we have coming is an awesome set of materials for the price paid. Very excited!

And yet you can buy a Swayback, or a Zulu Spear, or a Mini-Trapper, or a Backpocket, or a Saddlehorn (all knives that came out as collaborations) for well under $100. They just are made in different materials. A certain non BF dealer always has "exclusive" runs that are under 500 pieces. Case makes a lot of small runs, the better to serve those who buy them just like Beany Babies or Hot Wheels in the belief that such things are "collectible" and will have value in excess of what was paid for them.

I have always held that the Traditional Forum knife is best used to promote an old pattern not often seen in today's production runs. The 2013 Irish Congress was (to me) an ideal because no manufacturer had made a run of those since Fight'n Rooster's last in the early 1970's. The Forum has also managed to bring back cap lifters, easy opens, and a couple other patterns, and I'll bet that there are more buyers of the annual Case/Bose collaborations on this BBS per capita than anywhere else, mainly because they are old, unusual, patterns. And folks here actually use them, instead of tucking them away in the false hope that they will somehow gain value out of proportion in the next 10-20-30 years.

A Swayback Jack in CV (for example) for this Forums annual knife would, I think, sell well. Case collectors would come out of the woodwork, and who knows, it might actually attract some into becoming paying members on this Board. And a current production knife of that pattern can easily be had for less than $60, so I don't see the problem with cost.

I agree but they do have their own forum to hole up in so that may be why.

I will say Case does have a following, not sure how strong here, but given the prices of their special runs I am not so certain either if we could see a reasonable offering from them. I do recall that at one point they offered knives with some of their old brand names ie Case Brothers and made those in "better" steels so if we could get a forum knife out of them that might be the middle ground to aim for.

There are many of the pocket clip and thumbstud crowd over there. Buck makes a LOT of non-traditional knives. Some of them are pretty interesting and innovative.

For me, the Buck Forum has been where I've been 'holed' up. I read other forums and occasionally post in them.

Like many others I have knives other than Buck, but, have concentrated my efforts on Buck knives and mainly fixed blades. Their selection of traditional folders is limited now, and I didn't have an interest when they were producing variations of the 300 series.

I will tell you that I admire and enjoy this forum much more because of the people here, so much so that I have purchased a few traditionals(not Buck) so I could feel more a part of the forum.

You are a great bunch! Preston

I think this knife is going to be really special , the GEC 35 Churchill is one of my favorite patterns and this Buck has the same 2 very useful blades but in a really nice stainless steel. I understand this will ride a little heavier in the pocket than the 35 with the two backsprings instead of one but I think it will be worth it for the CPM 154

You find me the market and I'll make it all happen. :D:rolleyes:

I, for one, would love to see some follow-up offerings of the 300 series with FFG blades and with upgraded cover materials/blade steel similar to what was done with the forum knife.

Ebony covers and 5160 blade steel would be instant classics in my book. Of course, 1 book does not make a library....

Jeff, I hang around in both Blade sub-forums, the Buck and the Traditional, about the same amount of time. While I like Buck Knives the most for using and collecting, I also like Case Knives, Schrade USA, GEC, Imperial, etc. and those other brands are discussed here. If my focus was 100% Buck Knife then I would stay over there all the time. OH

Generally, I agree but I don't think the Buck will ride heavier. The GEC 35 has a very wide handle and I would imagine it is both heavier and broader than the forthcoming Forum Knife? Let's see :thumbsup:

I really love modern traditional knives. I did get the 2011 forum knife as well, but at $71 for an elk handled Buck 301 knife in CPM154, it's really hard to say no. Plus these make great gifts, especially for forum Secret Santas and so on. They're a great value.
