I'm new to this forum and I posted a thread asking about the price of a knife at a STORE near me, not with the intent to sell or buy on this forum, only to see if I was getting a good/bad deal. I'm still confused of what rule I broke but the thread was closed and I don't know where to go from here.

Asking values is restricted to paid memberships Gold and higher, because those are the ones required to sell items. Asking values can be misconstrued (either inadvertently or by design of the poster) as an intent to sell. Obviously, there's a lot of grey area, especially with an innocent question like yours, but to prevent abuse and sneakiness there's simply a blanket ban on asking for values by those that don't have the right membership(s).

The best way to find if you're getting a good deal or not is to compare it to well-known online knife dealers, Amazon, etc. If it's a discontinued knife, look it up on eBay and check the "completed listings" to see what it typically sells for.

Doesn't matter what your intent was. You cant ask about value.

Read this

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/904093-NEW-MEMBERS-Please-read-this-WHAT-IS-MY-KNIFE-WORTH

It clearly states "Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only. "

Where do you go from here? start looking at our supporting dealer members, the Exchange here to see what the knife has sold for previously, or go to an auction site and see what it sold for there.

There are thread stuck at the top of every forum, they contain information written to help you. It doesn't work though unless it's read, most people blow right past them and they end up catching our attention. A great effort is made to place information everywhere possible to help people, but time and time again they blow right past it. Might be a generational thing, who knows. The rules that apply site wide are here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=746&a=98
There is also a FAQ section at the top of every page, and this forum where you can ask specific questions.

The rules state that you cannot ask the value of a knife you have in your collection, well I don't own the knife. I'll just have to go to knife forums.com and ask them.

The actual rule:

[Q]uestions regarding valuation of knives and [not "in"] collections are limited to those with a membership level which permits selling on this site. Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only. This rule applies throughout the site.

the problem with that premise is prior to you a bunch of bad actors used the same type of questions to circumvent the rules.

When that happens the rules become more strict regarding this type of question.

The question concerned "the valuation of knives" and was, therefore, contrary to the rule quoted above - unless the management says otherwise.

and some sub-forums do not want that question AT ALL, regardless of your membership level

because 99% of the time, someone is thinking "i just scored, and i wanna know how much i can make, and oh yeah, come and get it"

there is almost no case i've seen where someone asks value, and is only curious ;) they can spend time on ebay and figure it out if that's the case.

This is about right.

I guess the rules state that you can't bring the subject of money up at all on this forum unless you have a certain membership. :/

"What should I expect to pay for "X"? Allowed?

That's a curveball in a way.

If you ask me "What's a decent 4-ish inch fixed blade for tossing in the truck?"

I'll tell you: "You can pick up an ESEE-3 over at BladeHQ for around $90 or so."

Exactly the same post. I'm not allowed to use this post to answer one of those questions, but the other question is just fine.

All academic for you anyways, HappyDaddy.... both allowed at your membership level.

WOW.... Everyone here is so welcoming! Pick on the FNG everybody. That's a great way to run a community of knife lovers.
