Four Inch USA-Made Stockman: The Ultimate Jackknife

The stockman has been a favorite of mine for many years. I carried a Camillus made Buck 303 for over a decade as a young man and it never failed me.

I don't have a current pic of all of my stockman knives. Here's a picture from a few years ago. I've purchased more since this was taken.
I actually prefer a 3 1/2" over a 4". I find it fits in my pocket better and doesn't make such a lump.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I am partial to this rather garish Camillus made Remington. It has perhaps the most gorgeous clip blade I've ever seen.

Ken Erickson did me a favor and put some of his jigged micarta on mine quite a few years back:

There are some really nice knives being shown. The 4 inch stockmans I have are my Dad's Schrade Old Time 80T. And a Case 75 large stockman. I actually pulled them out last night and cleaned and oiled them. I carry them once in a while. The stockman knife recently started to grow on me. I was not a fan for years. But I have grown to appreciate it a lot. The one thing that started to bring me around was the sheep foots blade. I learned what a great blade it is. I have 3 other stockmans as well. And I'm sure I will be adding more as I can in the future.

I bought this 885UH fifty-five years ago. It was my first stockman, and I've picked up "a few" since then. I'll have to get them all out for a pic sometime, but it won't come close to the 315 315 family photo..View attachment 3020963
I also bought mime 55 years ago in 1970. bought it from Randall Knives, as I figure if Randall was selling it it must be a good knife. Still have it, although not as well used as yours is. John

The stockman hasn't really proven to suit me very well, but of the various stockman I've had over the years ( a Schrade 34OT was my 1st quality knife) my favorite was the Colonial Ranger 933.
I've had a few and liked this one the best, but just wasn't using it so it got passed along.

It looks black in this one picture I have of it, but it's actually a very dark brown with reddish hints, I've seen some other rangers with this Jigged delrin but not another 933 and wish I had kept it.
These Colonial rangers are probably the best budget slipjoints ever made, and honestly I think they're a bit more solid than the swinden key Schrade OT's but neither are pinned all the way through the bolsters.
I believe I included it in the GAW box, hopefully whoever scooped it up is enjoying it.

Anybody looking to try a good large stockman, you can find the 933 mint in the package for $40 or less on Ebay regularly.

Took your advice H&S and picked up an NOS yellow ranger on the bay. I’ll post it with some observations when it comes in. Thanks!

I saw that one, way to go snatching it up.

Btw I had no clue that the covers on these rangers were lexan, I never knew it was used for knife handles before and always just assumed they were delrin.

I was hauling fruit & produce out of Florida at the time, and got mine at a truck stop in North Carolina. All I ever saw around home here were Old Timers, and this one just called out to me when I walked past the display case. I think I paid $15 or $17 for it, which was a lot of money for me to spend on a knife at the time.:)

I was on Okinawa, heading back to Vietnam for the 4th time. I ordered from one of the Randall paper catalogs I had. Wished I had kept the catalog too. John

"Lexan" is a brand name of Acrylic. 😇

I remember back in the 1960's and 1970's a couple companies used coloured "Lexan" (AKA: "Kitchen Counters") by name for covers and handles.

The clear used on knives with Abalone (real Abalone and pearl used on knives (and pistol/revolver grips) is a very thin sheet) is acrylic ... at least post war. Faux Abalone/pearl, and "tortious shell" is colored Acrylic. The clear over printed artwork (such as on the Camillus 'Riders Of The Silver Screen' series) is acrylic. Lexan or another brand ... who knows?

The ... "colourful" ... covers used by Case are acrylic ... whether they are "Lexan" brand I don't know.
Buck's standard handle on the 100 series fixed blades is an acrylic. They just call it something else.

This GEC #53 Cuban Stockman in coppertone acrylic was my gateway drug into 4" stockman collecting back in 2010.
