Frame lock question: lock failure or needs breaking in? (with video)

As a side note, I wouldn't trust early lockup on any knife if there's graphite or sharpie on the tang. Lock stick is annoying but taking that stick away and having an early lockup is not a good idea.

And there have definitely been Emersons with early lockup whose locks could be defeated by hand pressure. Early lockup isn't as secure, no matter what brand.

If you owned Emersons you'd know what I mean....no big deal.

What a shady store. I would report their name and behavior to KAI and on forums now and return knife to KAI to fix. Pain but that way the workmanship is settled/waranteed and the shop doesn't get away with that behavior.

Bummer to see another of these ZT videos. I had been considering a 452cf as my first but the rising number of serious/dangerous QC complaints here have nixed that idea.

What serious/dangerous QC complaints are you referring to? I haven't seen any more complaints about ZT than any other company.

I own five ZT's, including the 0452cf, and have no complaints. I have never had a bad experience with ZT. I believe the cases you are referring to are isolated incidents, and not an overall representation of ZT quality.

Do yourself a favor and get the 0452cf. It is an outstanding knife, and I think you would enjoy it.

I am glad the store eventually got it right. Great choice with Spyderco, they make an awesome knife.

With that said, I am sad that you have a bad taste in your mouth for Zero Tolerance knives. ZT makes an incredible knife. Just like any mechanical product, sometimes there are mistakes off the assembly line. I think most dealers try to catch them but sometimes they do get through. I would say with ZT it is less than 1 percent. Trust me when I say, that is above average for most of the major production knife makers. If you are interested in giving Zero Tolerance another try, I would love to be of help. Shoot me an eimail at any time and I will see what we can do to make you happy carrying a ZT again!

Thanks for offering help; I know that I got a lemon and that I can't really judge their other blades by what I got.
Most likely I'll be looking at 0630 or again a 0550, though I would need to hunt the latter on secondary market.

Finally got it settled.
They said that the employee(s) were "confused" and made a mistake by saying the ZT fixed it. I think this is a blatant lie, but no way to check.
They didn't want to ship it back to ZT, but offered either a refund or replacement.

Here's the result:

I checked it in and out and so far everything seems to be perfect: F&F, lockup, smoothness and even the grind :D

I'll try to get a ZT as well though. I was honestly impressed with their customer service and think such efforts should be rewarded.

Lastly, BIG THANKS to everyone who posted in this thread. Who knows what would have happened during use if I didn't send it back.
You guys were of immense help!

Wow! What a total mess! Glad it got resolved to your satisfaction. Wherever you bought that 550 from I would never buy from them again. That lock bar looked like total junk. It shouldn't have left ZT like that and actually, how do we know it did? With the propensity for this dealer to lie and scheme I would not be surprised if you weren't the first one to get that 550. A good dealer would have actually sent it back to ZT for you, paying all costs, rather than knowingly lying to your face. That is a total scumbag move. And whatever they did to "fix" the lock bar still looks like a hack job at best. The fact that they said ZT did that ugly modding is insulting to you and ZT. Perhaps for other European members here you could name the dealer so others know to avoid them.

Has to go back to either the dealer or ZT themselves. It isn't right.

It did go back to the dealer. They then lied and said the sent it back to ZT (the OP confirmed this with ZT). The dealer then tried to fix it themselves. While the OP said the knife worked after the fix, the lock bar still looked like a total mess.

That's what I thought as well, but I think I was the first one because of the initial detent and wearing in.

I just informed ZT's Warranty Supervisor about what happened in the end.

Should I post it here or it needs to be posted in "the good/bad & ugly" forum separately?

Honestly, I am sort of surprised this thread wasn't moved there initially. I'll let a mod know and they can decide. But for now I would put it in this thread. If it gets moved you won't need to start a new one.
