This is the working R&D prototype. Still some changes. It will be mounted on a hefty polished piece of granite.

this sharpener does essentially what a KME does, only with more emphasis on home use, and less on portability.

The jaws now have a release. red handle) The jaws now have two sets of bearings to make clapping and turning easier.

Pull the red lever while sharpening in, and the jaws spin with no resistance. Release red handle, and the jaws grab at level again.

If the pressure knob is loosened, when the red lever is pulled, the jaws open to allow easy insertion of the knife.

Before I start drilling in granite, anyone have suggestions for this project?

I was wondering the other day when you first posted a pic of an SM rod mounted in the EP arm, does the clamp on the EP arm actually hold the triangular stone securely in that position (with one of the "points" facing the rod)?

Bugger to load, till you get the gist of it. I am going to heat up a diamond rod, and let it heat a detent pattern into the plastic. That will help. In ten knives, no dropped rods yet, but an exact dedicated spot would be better.

Not only does it work well, look at the wear pattern from this knife, is right down the center of this rods.

Mount the rod with the V down, and you can really get creative. This knife was done freehand on the SharpMaker, but the results would be exacting transitions rather than slightly convex on this set up. I will do one on this set up soon.

Through constant movement, the angle cube stays on the entire sharpening procedure.

I was sharpening away tonight on my favorite steak knife, when an Epiphany struck me.

Why sharpen a channel on a knife at .5" when twice as much is available.

Again, trick to balance (twice as tricky now) but once it is set in place, works wonderfully. One stone was dirty, and one clean.

Time to get out the bar keepers friend.

For a 1" wide blade, what is the lowest angle that your mod can sharpen? Are you using the standard two piece arm connector/pivot with the threaded rod?

Looks like you'll have to do two now. I like that double SM rod set up.

More parts came in today.

What to call this Sharpener? FrankenSharp? Parts used from all the leading sharpeners, to make something bigger.

Presenting FrankenSharp. Does 10 degrees, to 45 degrees for scissors, up to 50 degrees.

Lumber will be replaced with second piece of granite, once I am sure all R&D is out of the way. Total weight of granite is 40 pounds and 5" in the KME area. (overkill)

Media Choices:

1 x 4" DMT

1 x 6" EP or other suppliers

.5 x 7" 1 rod SharpMaker

1 x 7" 2 rods SharpMaker

Better photo of sub base. Has cut outs to make moving about easier.

I do not remember if I tried putting the jaws directly on the EP or not. Sometimes I miss the obvious! Well Done! Only function I see not present is a jaw clutch. Having one now, I am not going back. It allows you to run the jaw pressure twice as high, and still turn the jaw 180 with no pressure.

Congratulations on having the courage to modify the height adjustment by REMOVING IT!

Add a set of roller bearings, and you will be happier with your KME.

To add a KME base is 25 and shipping. To add a EP clone base, including all the goodies to make it easily work with 1 x 6 stones, (including the stones) is 40 and free shipping.

A real choice, it would seem to me.

You would need a longer vertical rod, to restore the EP taller angles.

You could easily make a quick disconnect, by putting powerful magnets under the base, a powerful magnet under the KME, and a swivel attachment point, that locks into the tracking system of the EP. Set it in the track, turn 90 degrees, and the magnets lock it all tight and in place.
