I was bugging Sal about this the other day, and he told me to bring the subject to the forum:

What do you think about a lower-priced, lightweight Police model with FRN (Zytel/Grivory) handles. This is not being suggested as a replacement for the steel-handled classic Police model, but an additional variation. Same blade steel (VG-10) and hollow-grind. Keep in mind that it would take up additional SKU slots that might otherwise be used for a totally new knife design.

I understand that Spyderco has been debating the possibility of an FRN Police for some time, and they'd like to hear some of your opinions as well.

If you don't like the idea, then why not?

If you do like the idea, would you:

1. Want coloured FRN and/or black? (I was thinking a dark police blue.)

2. Want a Calypso Jr. Lwt. style reversible clip (tip-down), or an Endura style reversible clip (tip-up).

3. Any other refinements/changes to the Police pattern?

Blue or Black FRN plain edge with reversible clip Police model.
Where do I send the check:)

Although I would still favor the SS version, an FRN version would be cool...I think blue would be good as there are so many black FRN models already. Some people might wonder what's the difference between it and the FRN Endura if it were just black. Perhaps a different pattern on the FRN handle that still affords excellent grip but is a wee bit smoother/less abrasive on pocket material?

As far as the clip, on this I would prefer a clip something like on the Calypso Jr., but reversible with steel threads inserted to prevent stripping. I like that clip style better than the single large screw FRN Endura/Delica clips. Maybe the Police FRN can have an option of tip up or tip down.

You know I'm always in for new Spyderco's, but...

The VG-10 Endura is already in that size range.

If you were going to make one it would need features to set it apart. Lose the Endura type clip. A clip like on the Calypso jr would do the trick. Dark blue would be nice. And through a compression lock in for good measure. If we are giving up an SKU it needs to really stand apart from the Endura, which is already an awesome knife in that class.

I'd much rather have the G10 version. However, if it were considerably cheaper, I would probably get one. As Shootist said, the VG-10 Endura already fills that market.

SKU = Stock-Keeping-Unit.

All of the unique variations of the a model requiring shelf space. For example, one new model the Salsa:

Titanium, serrated
Titanium, plainedge
Green Aluminum, serrated
Green Aluminum, plainedge
Blue Aluminum, serrated
Blue Aluminum, plainedge
Khaki Aluminum, serrated
Khaki Aluminum, plainedge

1 model, eight SKUs.

I would like to see a "Police Tactical"

Black or dark blue FRN, cobra hood, reversable clip, lanyard hole and basketweave pattern handle and a black blade option

recoil

Not interested.

Whether it's irrational or not, I would never, ever trust a knife that big with handles that are/feel that weak.

The profile would be so similar to the Endura, that I would not bother to buy one. Right now the advantage is the G-10. It would be like having two enduras in the line. Its already almost like that, just one has the G-10.

Sorry, but for me the Police model is just too big to be practical for everyday use. So, I'd rather Spyderco devoted the SKU (which I was under the impression stood for "separately knowable unit") to some other, more useful knife.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

FRN Police. I asked the same question over a year ago. I defenetly would buy one and I am SURE it would sell in the "mass market".
I don´t buy the argument about the similarity to the Endura. If that was true the Endura II would make the SS Police obsolete as well. They are simply not the same knives.

I say YES! My point is:

I want one
It WILL SELL - a lot.
I see no reason not to make it (really!).

As for the FRN I wote for navy blue.

I think I would rather see Spyderco devote that SKU to something brand new and exciting! Take the Meerkat for example. Something brand new, or is it a spin off of an old idea? At any rate, I ordered mine today!

Yes, but NOT black, since the average (non knife Knut) user wouldn't be able to tell it from an endura.

I think this would be a neat idea! Spyderco should keep this fairly low volume, if they go forward with it. I would like a Police in the lower price range. I'll get greedy here and say that I would love a reprise of the Rookie in FRN also.

If this would come out before the Mili-Jr, then no. I want the Mili-Jr to come out as soon as possible!

I would certainly buy a frn police model if it had vg-10, the boye detent, a three-screw style clip (like on the calypso jr lightweight) and an unusual pattern and/or colour on the frn, i'm kinda bored with the volcano grip black frn look, in my opinion the police is a very efficient design and offered with the above features would make a definate impact, if the compression lock was added it would be very special indeed. Here's hopin!
