FRN Police: Spyderco wants to hear your opinion.

Please save the SKU's. I see no point in a FRN police. The steel one is a gem and will be even better with VG10. It is better to leave room for new medium length disigns.
Besides, the Endura can do almost anything a FRN Police would be able to do.
So, I see no funktional reason and no esthetical reason.

No. An FRN Police is a nice idea but, the Endura fits the bill just fine. Save the SKU for something else. I do like the idea of reversible clip, though.

As others have said, the Police is a high-end Spyderco. It should not be subjected to the FRN treatment that it's lower-end siblings have. VG-10, in Stainless Steel or G10 handles works for me.

I don't think so. The Endura seems like enough for me and I'd rather have a completely new knife.

Plain edge, reversible clip, FRN & black metal clip
Yup. I'll take one or two!

Lighter weight, & hopefully more affordable for us LEOs

Thanx 1911, meant to say FRN,

Remember, the G-10 Police has been discontinued.

Perhaps the concept here is some alternative to the s/s Police version. I think that if Spyderco does decided to go ahead with this, it will be to fully explore the interest of consumers in the Police product line, and in particular thos ewho really like FRN handled knives.

Essentially, the FRN Police would take the place recently vacated by the G-10 Police; at a lower cost; I think.

Not a big fan of the "Police," and even less of a fan of plastic. Pass. Sorry Carlos.

Military Jr. sounds good, though.

I like it. And if you said Spyderco would add new SKUs for it, I'd say go for it. But since it's a zero-sum game SKU-wise, I would much rather having something new take up that slot. A large-size Temperance, for example, or whatever else Spyderco has in store.

There is certainly a lot of controversy on this question. Has anyone added up the yays and nays?

While we're on the subject, We had thoughts to design a refined Police Model (4" urban carry). Are there any particular features you would want to include in a total redesign?

I'd like to see the police with a 3.8 or 3.9" blade. I've never understood 4 1/8" since so many places have a 4" limit. Some people may say that a shorter Police would conflict with the Endura or maybe the Military, but I disagree because the all of these knives have different blade profiles.

I believe so far its twenty-two for and twenty-two against with a few undecided. I think the masses would be more inclined towards a totally new police model. Personally i would be keen to see G10 handles, a compression lock, VG10 and a 14mm opening hole (starting to sound like a military jr!) on this knife if it is to be produced.
Have a good one,
matthew

MBC-rated Compression lock and a subtle guard/hilt designed in. If these were incorporated I'm sure I'd end up w/ one regardless of blade steel or handle material(G-10/Al/Ti) used.

Always something interesting brewing at Spyderco!

Since you asked, Sal ;), keep the same blade grind, complete with swedge, omit "Police" blade etching, and add:
  • compression lock
  • single finger cutout
  • traction grooves on back of hump
  • metal back spacer, extended past the scales at the butt for strikes & pressure point use, with lanyard hole
I'd prefer it tip down with the clip (maybe one of the new wire style ones? ;)) closer to the end for deep pocket carry. With VG-10 & a dark blue or OD green handle, I'd be SO there! :D Is it ready yet?

Hi Sal,

I would be careful about modifying the pattern (esp. on the steel model), which has been classicized. Here's what I would do if it were my call:

Two versions: a standard steel-handled premium model, and an FRN "Lightweight" available in two colours: dark blue and Rescue orange.

A 3.9" blade, same hollow ground pattern and same size blade hole. Absolutely keep the "POLICE" engraving. Compression lock -- MBC rated only if it won't add weight or thicken the handle, otherwise a "heavy duty" lock. Ambi tip-down clips on both versions.

I'm for an MBC rated Police with a few minor adjustments--definitely keep the overall blade and handle shape (except for maybe a minor change by deepening the front finger groove), then like the new lil temperance, ad a compression lock, recessed steel liners, finger indexing indents, and the ability to reposition the clip for either tip-up or tip-down carry.

Hi Sal,

I like the idea of a new Police.:D My ideas for this would be to keep the overall design the some. Use VG10 or V30 as blade material. Make the handle out of carbon fiber for lightness, smoothness and strength. Use the compression lock if possible. I think the a new police should be a hi-end knife so as not to be to much like the Endura. The Endura for the lower end of the marked, an new police for the hi end.

Please keep the ss police as well, it truly is a classic.

Police. Yum. The changes I'd make are to a flat saber grind, lengthen the swedge, maybe by a half-inch to an inch, keep the Boye dent, but watch the locking lever resistance; not too strong. Lastly, sharpen that curve on the butt of the handle slightly, so it can be better used nonlethally, targeting pressure points. For color, gimme black, in something other than that square crater volcano texturing. How bout the spokes and concentric circles like the Native, to keep the overall elegance of the knife, even if it's in FRN. Dark navy blue would be good as well, but either of these colors would have a tactical look, so I'd prefer just black. Tip-up or tip-down would depend on the strength of the lock bias. I'd prefer tip down, especially if you want to upgrade the lock to the compression lock, but a strong lockback carried tip-up would be good as long as it stayed smooth.

Since it's supposed to be a pricepoint model, full recessed liners would get expensive, so how about recessed liners just around the tang, for smooth metal-to-metal contact around the tang and reinforcement of the pivot holes. A small counterweight liner or liners at the butt might be necessary to strengthen the butt of the handle and balance the knife in the user's hand.

P.S.: Anyone who says the Endura and the Police are so similar as to not be produced at the same time does not understand each one's strengths. The Endura is a big, unsubtle, large-bladed heavy knife. It's best uses IMO are for heavy-duty utility cutting, intimidation, and some MBC/self-defense. The Police, though longer, doesn't look as big when opened. This makes it a little more subtle and elegant, but not by a large margin (a long knife is a long knife in sheeple's eyes). It's slimness coupled with the FRN would make it a lighter knife than the Endura, while still having the length to do any job. Its handle is also a feature not seen in many other knives not specifically MBC-designed. That tapered butt means the knife can be used as an effective nonlethal control weapon.

With a choice between the two, especially in FRN to lower the cost, I'd definitely take a VG-10 Police over any Endura.
