FRN Police: Spyderco wants to hear your opinion.

I would love an FRN police model. In black with a reversible clip and half serrated blade. -Lev

Sorry, I wouldn't touch a Zytel-handled police model. Zytel is so inferior to and far more unreliable than than G10; I would never have a zytel-handled knife that I might have to depend upon.

Sounds like a great idea now that the G10 model has gone bye-bye.

Call it the "Chief" or something - since there's already the Rookie... Detective might already be taken by another company.

Anyhow, there's nothing wrong with a properly executed FRN handle - for example, the newer models of the Vesuvius with the Bug handles look a hell of a lot better than the previous "flat" editions. One of the things I mentioned to Sal at the Vegas Classic is how the new sculptured handles were a step in the right direction; hopefully this trend will continue with new models like the Police "Lieutenant".

Speaking of which, Sal, how about a Titanium handled, S30V "Commisioner" model?

The SS Police is still my #1 favorite knife. I just can't see it in FRN. As others have mentioned, the Endura fits the price point for this type of knife nicely. A FRN Police would just get lost in the crowd. Just my 2 cents. Best regards. -Rick

I really don't like FRN all that much... Still the Endura is a very fine knife, do we really need another similar blade? I don't think I would buy one... The G10 model was not a good seller I think? FRN will make it cheaper?

The FRN Police is a great idea!
The SS Police model is just too heavy (5.5oz) to carry around all the time (especially in the summer when wearing lighter clothes).
And now the G-10 model has been dicontinued so there is a void to be filled.

A few preferences:
Flat-ground blade like the G-10 Police (plain or serrated).
Lock-back with Boye's dent.
Green or blue (but not too dark).
A different texture than the Volcano pattern (maybe like the Calypso or Native patterns).

It would sell!

Good luck,
Allen.

Jumping on the No no no bandwagon. A FRN Police would just look like Spyderco was trying to cheapen down a great model. Don't take great knives and dumb them down just to make them cheaper. Make the effort to make a knife that people want, and can use. If you want to make a low level folder, do it. Fine. We'll love it. (although most of the new designs I've seen come out of Spyderco are really blech.)

Don't take champagne and water it down to make it different.

Nope.., I just don't like the FRN on any large knife. Save the SKU for the Military Jr.

Let's get this done folks. We screamed loud enough and got the Spyderhawk. What say?

Blue FRN handle
Single steel liner
Three-screw clip tapped into liner, NOT like the reversible clip on Endura, etc.
VG-10 Steel

PLEASE!!!!!!!

NO
Simply bring back the G-10, but using the current blades, just like the CF sprint run.

If redesigned, use nested liners.

Not crazy about FRN, but need something to fill the gap now that G10 is gone. Stainless is just too heavy for EDC. Soemthing like a Calypso style clip oriented for tip-down configuration; with the clip mounted fairly high so as to position the knife for a relatively "low ride" in the pocket. IMHO, Low ride is key to a knife this big. Sometimes it's best not to let others see the size of your jimmy until you whip it out! :D :D :D

IMHO, FRN is plenty strong for a blade of that length. I'd favor a nice dark blue. I think the market would be there at the price point. Remember, the blades are already manufactured for the existing police line-up. Could even do something special with the handles like the D'Allara Rescue commemorative.

I say go for it!

My 2 cents.

Ben

Love my police... but my vote is NO on the FRN:
BTDT. Companies thrive on new products and innovation. It keeps employee and consumer morale higher. There are so many cool ideas clamoring for Spyderco SKU space that I'd hate to see a slot wasted on a reincarnation. Keep your engineers frosty, do something radical. :D

I'm all for an updated version with an MBC rated compression lock, G-10, and finger cutout/guard. -Lev

I've been carrying a Police model for quite some time as an EDC and haven't seen any reason to carry anything else. I was carrying an SS model, then I got a CF version which was a bit thicker and worked well. I recently got a G-10 Police and it hasn't left my pocket. I like the flat ground blade and the G-10 feels better and is easier to hold onto. Both the SS and CF versions needed additional grip to get them out of my pocket so I stuck clear bathtub grip onto the non-clip side so I could get them out of my pocket easier. No problem with the G-10.
But the question was about an FRN version. Tip down, VG-10, and a Calypso Jr or Native handle pattern. Or, something new which would facilitate easy removal from a pocket but still have grip. Oh yeah, and lighter than a G-10 police, actually, as light as possible. I have no problem with the sturdiness of FRN and would probably carry an Endura if it were tip-down.
Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Ken

I really don't think it would sell. The Endura is to close to the same thing with a stronger tip.

Not interested.

Whether it's irrational or not, I would never, ever trust a knife that big with handles that are/feel that weak.

What he said.
